Minutes
1. Matters arising from previous minutes
1. Plans for next term still include an afternoon to discuss current research projects; this
might also be combined with a social event.
2. Update on project work – SD has emailed further details about the Book week event
which will take place on 23rd April. The public engagement event will be taking place on
1st April from 2:00 – 3:00pm.
3. PGR Conference – GV has sent an email to encourage everyone to attend.
4. GV gave an update on potential ML PGR students via the DTP. Generally there has been
a good interest with several strong applications.
5. PK will now attend the ML departmental meetings to represent PGRs
2. Involvement of students in teaching
PK raised the issue of opportunities for PGR teaching at the recent departmental meeting,
the department are waiting for confirmation of funding; this will be followed up at the next
meeting. In the meantime GV will email to gauge interest.
3. PRESS
GV gave details of the forthcoming PRES survey and encouraged everyone to complete the
survey, a reminder email will follow.
4.
Annual Monitoring
GV reminded the group that the yearly Annual Monitoring exercise is underway; this is a
compulsory exercise for all to complete. Closing date is 2nd April.
5. Modern Languages Roundtable Update
MC gave an update on the forthcoming event taking place on 1st April from 2:00 – 4:00pm.
There will be 3 speakers including; a representative from the library and x2 PGR students
who have experience of organising and working with public engagement. It was agreed to
also invite the visiting Chinese PhD students. GV thanked MC for organising the event.
The PGRs in ML and their Chinese guests were encouraged to continue with their project,
which now is called ‘War Voices’. A follow-up workshop has been advertised and will take
place on 29 April. We want to record authentic texts dealing with World War One in
different languages, work on translations and as a result will have a first batch of material for
a sound installation. The project will make contact to the University Summer School; the
plan is to run a workshop with attending students to increase the volume and diversity of
‘Voices’ in different languages. All PGRs in Modern Language are welcome to contribute to
the public engagement project.
6. Supervision
No issues
7. Any other business
It was agreed to organise an end of year social, suggested dates included; 3rd or 10th June.
The social could also include the presentation of some papers. Further discussion will be
held at the next forum meeting which take place in term 3.
