Faculty of Arts and Humanities Student Voice Form Please note that this form should be sent round to meeting attendees, posted on the department webpage and sent to Sarah Halpin within 1 week of the meeting. Progress against each issue should be reviewed at the start of the following meeting, before fresh issues are raised. Department: MUSIC Nature of meeting: PGR/PGT SSLC Date of meeting: WED 21 OCT Issue raised by Student Representatives General Instrument storage: could this be provided for personal instruments as they are heavy and cumbersome to carry around to rehearsals between classes. This would mainly be guitars and small percussion items Common room for music students: it is just for UG students or all music students? PGT Seminars: it was commented that PGR auditors attending MA seminars are taking over the class discussion, it is encouraging when they contribute but it is important they do not dominate the class. SOAS: Registering for SOAS modules was confusing and difficult if students could not attend the dedicated 1 day session to sign up. What is happening as a result Claire Arnold to look into areas to home possible lockers and to seek funding from Head of Department. SWB29 was discussed as an option as it currently homes student union lockers. It was commented that if more lockers could be homed in SWB29 it is now a teaching room so students would not be able to access their instruments while a class is taking place Claire Arnold to look into the common room use history, if it is solely for UG, Claire to speak to Head of Department to see if this policy could be updated Bettina Varwig to speak with academics to ensure auditors do not dominate classes Timescale of action 2 weeks 1 week 1 week Bettina Varwig will review SOAS registration to improve 1 month for future enrolments 1 Timetables: these were difficult to find as information was not provided on how to access student timetables. Students asked for PDF version of MMus programme to be circulated to all students A PDF version could not be sent as the timetable is subject to change, students should access the live timetable via the website or the timetable mobile app to ensure the correct day/time/venue is displayed. Timetable information was handed out in Welcome booklets by the faculty but going forward it will also be mentioned in Department Inductions how to access timetables.kcl.ac.uk to cover all grounds. Module registration: it would be useful to have Reps to send Bettina example of other departments a list of all optional modules available to MMus websites with the view to improve ours students outside of Music. It was commented other departments provide this information on the website Printers: facilities closer than the Maughan Library for printing PGR Business cards: could all PGR students have business cards printed as they are useful to handout at conferences Information First PARC meeting, Tuesday 3 November 2-4pm room K0.17 given to students by department All PGR students can access the print room on the top floor of SWB with their PhD room key. Printing for PGR students across KCL is free of charge. Claire Arnold to circulate reminder to students of printer location/access At present, business cards have been printed as and when they are asked for. Claire Arnold to review budget to see if the department could provide all PGR students cards now. Students to decide which rep attends 2 1 week 1 week 2 weeks Any issues identified for Faculty-wide consideration MA Students asked for following information to be clearly available in induction week: quick link to find timetable, email account information as they are not aware how to locate this, where to print and submitting essays is on KEATS. Most of this information was displayed in the Welcome booklet but if students did not receive a Faculty bag containing the booklet till the end of Induction week this information was provided too late. Suggestion: could the welcome booklet available online so we email all the students in advance of them arriving with this information? Only part that was missing from the booklet was information on Follow me printing and costs. Useful to include for next year. Wifi connection is still extremely poor in the South West Block, particularly the upper levels. There is an ongoing IT update throughout the college, Claire Arnold reported the wifi issue in March and July but nothing has improved. A further message will now be sent to IT asking for an update. Students are unable to study when on the upper floors, this is a particular problem for PGR students as their study room falls within the no connection area. 3
