Collaborations offer new entrance points to the ever-more inquisitive museum-goer. For art museums, partnerships create opportunities to address visitor curiosity, engage our communities, and open access to our collections in new and out of the ordinary ways. They also provide fresh perspectives to works of art and ways of thinking. The 2014 NAEA Museum Education Preconference examines the importance of innovative collaborations in art museums and explores the benefits and challenges in creating meaningful partnerships with other organizations and people in our communities. The Preconference offers new insights on the idea of innovative external partnerships. The collaborative work currently taking place by the Balboa Park art museums and many other models from across the country serve as inspiration for our day, as participants challenge themselves to think about what it means to extend the work of their institutions outside the museum’s walls. The Preconference also considers the question of what is and what is not collaboration. The ultimate goal of the day is for every attendee to leave with one or more fresh ideas on collaborations that they can create in their own communities. The entirety of the 2014 Museum Education Division Preconference takes place in San Diego’s picturesque Balboa Park, which served as the site of the 1915-1916 Panama-California Exposition. The day begins at the San Diego Museum of Art with the Stronger Together: Collaborating to Connect Communities Panel Discussion focusing on innovative collaboration initiatives taking place in San Diego, across the country, and around the globe. Discussions continue in the beautiful museum galleries of the San Diego Museum of Art, the Mingei International Museum, the Museum of Photographic Arts, and the Timken Museum of Art, where participants will take part in a Looking, Learning & Collaborating Gallery Experience. After an al fresco lunch, participants have the opportunity to attend two Learning Together: Collaboration Case Study Workshops. These thematic workshops are designed to offer space for open dialogues on creating collaborative opportunities in one’s own community. During the workshops, presenters will share specific projects and offer insight on managing collaborative work in museums. The day concludes with an outdoor wine reception giving participants an opportunity to share ideas for future collaborative work and to celebrate the good work they are doing in art museum education. Note: After registering for the Preconference, attendees will receive an e-mail with a link to an electronic form that allows them to select afternoon break-out sessions and lunch options. Please allow 7-10 days to receive this e-mail follow up.
