Aims International and National Deaf Politics • To understand the workings of International Deaf and Translation/Interpreting Organisations and Federations in relation to Internationally recognised groups • To enable students to critically evaluate the tensions between the various UK National Deaf organisations and the ways in which they integrate, interact and synthesise, culturally as well as politically • To critically assess the various theories of Deaf political ideologies in relation to International and National Deaf politics • To identify and critically assess the multiple contexts in which ‘Deaf politics’ is understood, with particular emphasis on an Interpreting and Translation contexts 15. Syllabus International and National Deaf Politics This programme will equip students with the ability to recognise the myriad of ways in which ‘politics’ is understood in Deaf contexts; building on the themes identified in Year two. Particular emphasis is on the way in which national, regional and international Deaf politics is framed and structured organically (i.e. down to laypeople/grassroots BSL users), and the tensions that arise in relation to social, political and civil society institutions. 16.
