To provide students with broad knowledge of the socio-political situation of Deaf or signing communities
To develop students’ awareness of diversities in Deaf or signing communities
To provide students with a solid foundation for working with members of minority groups, particularly from Deaf or signing communities, in order to be ready to embark
on placement activities.
· To increase students’ self-awareness and reflective skills with regard to working with members of minority communities.
· To provide students with conceptual and theoretical tools to understand and discuss the social, political and ideological issues concerning minority communities
· To maintain students’ academic skills to develop critical reflections of the subject matter, including library research, critical reading, advanced literacy skills, problemsolving activities and academic writing.
16. Syllabus
The syllabus will cover some or all of the following themes mainly with examples from the British Deaf/BSL community and will relate these to situations which students are
likely to encounter in their professional lives and during placement courses:







Diversity within Deaf communities, such as education, professionals, special needs.
Language and communication practices when working in Deaf community settings.
Employment opportunities and Deaf communities.
Barriers and access to public services, e.g. in medical, educational, health, legal and media domains.
Lives of children in minority communities, e.g. Children of Deaf adults (CODAs), Deaf children of Deaf and hearing adults, issues of language acquisition.
Organisations, institutions and meeting places.
Equality and empowerment.
