Newspaper on a French-Speaking Area
A. ROUGH DRAFT – due date: November 22, 2013, Friday
1. Articles to include:
a. Geographical location, including physical features, important cities, natural resources, products, system of
money, etc.
b. Biography on an important person from that country or province.
c. Describe the capital city and/or largest city.
d. Write a brief history of the country or province.
e. Describe the culture of the country or province (festivals, celebrations, etc.)
f. Discuss foods, how people live, holidays. Provide a recipe of one of the foods you mention. Extra credit if you bring in
a dish from your country or province.
B. FINAL COPY – due date: December 11, 2013 - Wednesday
1. Make necessary corrections to the article used for the ROUGH DRAFT.
2. Include a map of the country and also the current flag.
3. Choose an appropriate title for your newspaper and supply a date for the paper.
4. Include an illustration indicative of your country, i.e., famous person, picturesque scene, monument, festival, etc.
5. FINAL COPY must be done on unlined paper and set up in columns. It should be at least 4 pages long, printed on both
sides. FINAL COPY may be typed or designed on a computer.
6. All blank sections should be filled with relevant ads, sayings, proverbs, additional illustrations, etc.
7. You must include a section for newspaper credits, i.e., Editors (students’ names), (Staff (anyone who helped),
Bibliography
8. Grade will be based on composition, organization, accuracy, and neatness.
Additional Suggestions: You may wish to “date” your paper from an earlier time, i.e., The Hundred Years’ War, The French
Revolution, etc. by aging your paper (with tea or coffee).
Newspaper Project on Person, Era, or Monument
A. ROUGH DRAFT – due date: November 22, 2013 - Friday
B. FINAL COPY – due date: December 11, 2013 – Wednesday
1. Must include articles written in the style of a newspaper, according to the following topics:
a. Historical People
i. Childhood and education
ii. Early work or occupation
iii. Later works or occupation
iv. If an artist or author, list of titles or most important works
v. Description of a noted work or accomplishment
vi. Family life, friends, or legends associated with the person
vii. What mark did this person make on the world? In other words, why is s/he honored?
viii. What would the person say about how her/his legacy?
b. Periods of History
i. Describe the background of the period, i.e., what caused it to happen?
ii. Discuss and describe important people of the period (human interest story)
iii. Describe the changes that occurred in the country during this period
iv. How did this period of history affect the country of today?
v. If a holiday ensued because of this era, describe it, i.e., French Revolution – Bastille Day
vi. Describe an important single event of this era
c. Monuments
i. Description and location of monument
ii. Biography on the architect/s
iii. Describe the construction process (length of time, materials used, etc.)
iv. Why was the monument constructed? What did it commemorate or how is/was it used?
v. Describe an important event that took place at the site of the monument, i.e., Notre Dame – Coronation of
Napoleon
vi. How is the monument used today?
vii. If the monument could speak, what would it say about itself, about why people visit it, why people should
visit, or what “interesting” events they have seen and heard (this article will be in the voice of the
monument; be creative and have fun with it, but make sure the tone adheres to what you have learned and
that it is school-appropriate).

historical period occurred.
4. You must have an illustration of the person, the monument, or the event during the period of history.
5. The title of your newspaper is important and should reflect the era in which it takes place. You may date your newspaper
with the date the person died, at the end of the historical period, or the day of the monument was finished. In other words,
this newspaper should be a “Special Edition” reflecting the achievements of the person, the era, or the monument.
