Description of Assignments/Assessments
A. Daily Work -- Counts 30% of final grade
Lessons 1-25
At the completion of Lessons 1-25, please print and turn in the Lesson Report provided with each
lesson. You may also wish to print one for yourself so that you may keep track of your work. You
will receive a checkmark for each lesson completed in its entirety. A grade of “0" will be given if you
do not complete the entire lesson and/or do not turn in the lesson report showing completion of the
lesson. It is imperative that each lesson be completed in its entirety and on time in order to
successfully complete the course. These reports are due at the next class period after which the
instructor has gone over them. No late assignments will be accepted. You are required to
Tidewater Community College

complete the work for the class period in which they are due. If absent when assigned, call someone
in the class to ask what the assignment was so that you will be prepared and ready.
Lessons 26-49
At the completion of Lessons 26-49, you will complete and turn in the documents from these lessons
as assigned. There are no Lessons Reports to be printed from these lessons as there were for
Lessons 1-25. They may include problems from the lessons, self-check questionnaires; drills,
objective tests, and drill work. No late assignments will be accepted. They must be turned in at
the class period after which they were assigned. No exceptions. . If absent when assigned, call
someone in the class to ask what the assignment was so that you will be prepared and ready.
At least one problem from each assignment will be graded using the following penalty point method:
-1 point Each major error such as words incorrectly divided according to hyphenation rules, failure
to follow instructions, incorrect margins, wrong spacing, copy not centered, failure to underscore,
editing without instruction to do so, etc. You are to correct all errors made.
-½ point Each minor error such as forgetting to add reference initials or enclosure notations in a
letter/memo, typing them in the wrong order, etc. The item is mailable.
After errors are marked, the penalties are totaled. Grading is as follows:
A - 0 penalty points = 4 points
B – 1-2 penalty point = 3 points
C – 3-4 penalty points = 2 points
D – 5-6 penalty points = 1 point
F - 7 or more penalty points = No points
An automatic grade of “F” will be given if there is one typographical error and/or the paper has seven
or more penalty points as noted above.
Retypes will be required for papers receiving a grade of D or F for a grade no higher than C if the
retype is perfect--no errors. Please turn in the retype with the new printout. Please mark the paper
“retype.” Retypes are due at the next class period after which they were received. No credit will be
given if the paper is not turned in by that time. You are not to complete retypes in class unless
given permission to do so. Please keep printouts of all daily work. All work must be identified with your
name, the document name, and page number.
B. Timed Writings - Count 30% of Final Grade
The student is required to pass two 3-minute timed writings on two different timed writings with no
more than five errors on each timed writing. Timed writings will be graded as follows:
A - 40 words per minute (wpm) & higher
B - 35-39 wpm
C - 30-34 wpm
D - 25-29 wpm
Tidewater Community College
Official Course Syllabus For AST 101
4
Please record on all timed writings turned in the number of words typed, number of errors, the grade
according to the timed writing scale as shown above, and the page number of the timed writing.
Example: 40/2 A Page 100
Please keep printouts of all timed writings you have passed.
In order to pass AST 101 as long as your daily work and tests are passing, you must pass two timed
writings by the end of the course no matter what your grade is for Daily Work and Tests. A grade of
F for the course will be received if you do not pass the two required passing timed writings. You must
practice every day in order to do this! I will average your two best timed writings.
C. Tests - Count 40% of Final Grade
Periodic timed tests to test the student’s recall of basic typewriting theory and understanding of each
problem studied will be given after the material has been introduced, practiced, and graded for
points. Test dates will be announced. No makeup tests will be given unless prior arrangements
have been made with the instructor; a grade of zero will be given on a missed test no matter
what the circumstances. No exceptions.
Tests may consist of theory (written) and/or application (computer generated). Theory (written) tests
are graded using the 10-point scale:
A - 90 to 100
B - 80 to 89
C - 70 to 79
D - 60 to 69
Application tests (using the computer) are graded using the point system as mentioned under daily
work in Part A.
Graded tests will be given back to the students for discussion; however, the test/test disk/test
printouts may not be kept by the student. A zero will be given if the test is kept. They will be kept in
the instructor’s office for the student to view. They will be destroyed at the end of the semester.
Please keep a record of your grades.
Grade Policy
Your final grade will be the combined average of the previously mentioned areas with the percentage
weight as indicated. Please keep a file of all graded work (plus a copy on your flash drive or other
storage media) until you receive your grade. Discrepancies in grades will not be considered unless
you can show all graded work and have those files on storage for the instructor to view.
Final grades are made available to each student within the Student Information System (SIS) now
web delivered via MyTCC or SIS.
Based on the progression of the course, the grade distribution for each assignment may change.
However, if changes are made, I will notify you in a timely manner and in writing via Blackboard, Email. Check both frequently!

Blackboard and Course Communication
Although this is a face-to-face class, I do rely on Blackboard and E-mail to correspond with students. I
may have forgotten to tell you something in class, a student may have a question that I think all students
may need the answer to, etc. Because you are absent, does not mean that you are not responsible for
completing assignments that are due on the day you return. You are responsible for completing your
Tidewater Community College

8
assignments by the specified due dates. Work submitted past the deadline will not be accepted unless
arrangements have been made with the instructor. You are responsible for all course work from the first
day of class no matter when you registered for the class.
BLACKBOARD: Blackboard is the name of the course management software that will be used for this
course. You can access Blackboard through the following web address: http://bb.vccs.edu/?bbatt=Y The
BB Administrator will create user IDs and Passwords to access Blackboard the first week of classes. Click
the “Login Instructions” link to find out your ID and Password. You can preview a course in Blackboard as
a Guest, but you will not be able to access all areas until your real account is created. Blackboard will be
used for posting all assignments, class email among students and instructor, and class discussion.
If you have any problems with either the VCCS Blackboard system or the VCCS Student Email system
you should use the link that is on the first page of Blackboard -- http://bb.vccs.edu). Note that questions
about coursework or course material in a Blackboard course should be sent to the instructor of that course.
Remember to logout of Blackboard rather than just clicking on the close button.
The logout icon is the blue/green area above the tabs.
This will ensure that no one else can access your BB account.
Also, I will e-mail you messages, when necessary, using your TCC student e-mail address. Check your
school e-mail account and for new Announcements on Blackboard 3-4 times a week, every other day.
Students will send e-mail regarding assessments, etc., and I like to advise you of any changes, problems,
etc.
I check Blackboard and e-mail frequently and will try to answer your questions within 48 hours or less.
You have my office hours and telephone number as well. I am here to assist you. You are not bothering
me. Do not feel threatened that you have to ask a question. Ask! That is how we will both succeed in this
course.
Course Policies
1. Attendance Policy: All students are expected to be present and on time at all scheduled class and
laboratory meetings. Instructors are not required to admit a student who arrives late to the
classroom. A student who adds a class or registers after the first day of classes is counted absent
from all class meetings missed. Roll will be taken. If a student is absent more than 15 percent of
scheduled instructional time, attendance may be defined as unsatisfactory and the instructor may
choose to drop the student with a grade of “F” in the course. . This calculation includes absences
occurring during the add/drop period. See also the Withdrawal Policy in this syllabus for more
information. Per the college’s attendance policy, faculty has the right to develop a more stringent
policy as well. Students who do not attend or participate in class by the deadline to drop for tuition
refund may be deleted from the course.
Tidewater Community College
Official Course Syllabus For AST 101

If the student is more than five minutes late three times, one absence will be recorded.
Leaving class early without the instructor’s permission will count as one absence. Students are
required to notify the instructor via e-mail, telephone, if they are going to be late or absent from
class before the class in which they are going to be late or absent from begins.
Students are required to schedule a minimum of two additional lab hours per week
Practice may be completed at home and at school. There is no assigned lab time. The
microcomputer lab schedule will be posted. Take note of times that are convenient for you.
Unscheduled downtime must be taken into consideration as a student plans time for assignments.
Lab assistants and other computer instructors are available in the computer labs to assist you with
any hardware/software problems. They are not responsible for completing your lab assignments.
Allow adequate time to complete your assignments as you will experience frustration if the
computers are down and you are trying to meet a deadline.
Drinking, smoking, eating, and children are not permitted in the computer labs and classrooms.
Children may not be left unattended on the grounds, in automobiles, the snack bar, or lounge
areas. Please turn off or turn to vibrate mode all telephones, beepers, and pagers while in class
and in the computer labs. Put them away, out of sight. They should not be viewed, talked on, or
heard during class or while in the classroom. No calls, unless of an extreme nature, such as a
family emergency, (please see me), are permitted in the class or labs. Please advise those who
may call you. This policy has to be enforced due to recent events regarding text messaging and
taking pictures of tests, etc., with cell phones.
Misuse of Equipment: Any student caught deliberately damaging lab equipment and/or
introducing virus programs into the computer lab will be dismissed from class immediately,
referred to the proper authority and given a failing grade for the course. Any student caught
removing any school or teachers’ property including hardware or software will also be dismissed
from class, referred to the proper authority, and given a failing grade for the course.
2. Late Work/Make-up Exam Policy:
No late work will be accepted unless prior
arrangements have been made with the instructor. You are required to check Blackboard,
e-mail, and other various methods of communication for assignments to be completed.
3. Statement on Classroom Behavior: TCC is committed to maintaining a social and physical
environment conducive to carrying out its education mission. Therefore, all members of the TCC
community are expected to demonstrate standards for civility.
 Be moderate in speaking. Loud, obscene, argumentative, or threatening speech is disruptive
to teaching and learning and is offensive to others. It has no place in an academic setting.
 Resolve any disagreements in a positive, non-combative manner. Request the assistance of
college authorities if needed.
 Show respect for the comfort of others in an educational setting by observing acceptable
standards for personal cleanliness and dress.

4. Electronic Devices Policy: Cell phones, pagers, and other communication devices are
prohibited from use in classrooms, laboratories, and libraries, unless authorized by the
appropriate faculty or staff.
5. Disposition of Classes for Emergency Shutdown of the College
In the event of an emergency shutdown of the college, the president and her executive
staff may elect to conclude the term in session if eighty-five percent or more of that term
has been completed. If the term in session is concluded, faculty shall compute final
grades of students based on coursework completed at that point.
Academic Policies
Students are responsible for being aware of the policies, procedures, and student responsibilities
contained within the current edition of the TCC Catalog and Student Handbook. Students should
familiarize themselves with the college's policies regarding misconduct and inclement weather found
in the Student Handbook.
Withdrawal Policy
Students who wish to withdraw without academic penalty should contact a counselor to determine
the appropriate procedure. Withdrawals through completion of 60 percent of a session will result in a
W grade. After 60 percent of a session is completed, a withdrawal will result in a grade of F in a
credit course or a grade of U in a developmental course, except under mitigating circumstances that
must be documented by the instructor and approved by the academic dean. Dynamic session
classes have unique refund and withdrawal dates. Contact a campus Enrollment Services Office for
more information, or visit http://www.tcc.edu/students/calendar/academic/Dynamic.htm.
A student who drops after the last day to withdraw does not receive a "W." He/she receives an "F," in
which case there is both an academic and financial penalty. A student who withdraws by the
deadline faces a financial penalty, but not an academic penalty.

Academic Integrity
TCC will expect students to demonstrate personal and academic integrity, to be open to new ideas,
and to share in a community where individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures help one
another grow intellectually, socially, and personally.
TCC expects students to achieve, not just to get by. And while many caring and talented faculty and
staff are here to help, students must take responsibility for their own learning. Students should strive
for a high level of academic performance and to be responsible, contributing citizens within the
college and in outside communities. Above all, TCC wants students to develop a love of learning that
will last a lifetime, along with a life-long interest in maintaining emotional and physical wellness.

Statement on Plagiarism and Academic Misconduct
Academic misconduct includes, but is not limited to, the following actions: cheating on an
examination or quiz—either giving or receiving information; copying information from another person
for graded assignments; using unauthorized materials during tests; collaboration during
examinations; buying, selling or stealing examinations; arranging a substitute for oneself during
examinations; substituting for another person, or arranging such a substitution; plagiarism—the
intentional or accidental presentation of another’s words or ideas; collusion with another person or
persons in submitting work for credit in class or lab, unless such collaboration is approved in
advance by the instructor.
Faculty members who have reliable evidence of academic misconduct will (1) investigate the matter,
and (2) review the facts of the matter and the proposed penalty with the appropriate academic dean.
They may then take one or more of the following actions:




Require the work to be accomplished again
Give no credit for the test, paper, or exercise
Assign a grade of F, U, or W for the course
Refer the matter to the campus Dean for Student Services or designee for possible
disciplinary sanction through the college’s disciplinary procedure
If the faculty member chooses to refer the matter to the campus Dean for Student Services or
designee for disposition, the Plenary Disciplinary Procedure shall be followed, and the student’s
dismissal from the college is a possibility.
Disability Services
Students who have documented, diagnosed disabilities, and who need special accommodations for
tests, etc., are advised to see the Disabilities Services staff in Student Services so that the instructor
may be notified of what accommodations are appropriate in each case. Requests for
accommodations should be made to the designated campus disability services counselor at
least 45 days before classes begin. Documentation must be provided to support the need for
accommodations. Accommodations do not begin until the proper paperwork has been
presented to the instructor for their approval and signature.
For assistance with disabilities, contact the campus Disabilities Counselor/Provider or the
Coordinator of Learning Disabilities Services: call 822-1213, visit Student Services/Development, or
visit the Disability Services webpage at
http://www.tcc.edu/students/specialized/disabilityservices/index.htm
Emergency Procedures
In the event of a bomb threat, tornado, or fire, students and staff may be asked to evacuate the
building or move to a secure location within the building. Evacuation routes for movement to an
external location or to a shelter within the building are posted at the front of the room. Students
should review the maps and make sure that the exit route and assembly location for the building are
clearly understood. If assistance is required during an evacuation, please let the instructor know at
the end of the first class.
