Students should familiarize themselves with the college's policies regarding academic integrity, plagiarism, academic misconduct, and inclement weather found in the Student Handbook. Student Handbook: http://www.tcc.edu/forms/handbook/ TCC Catalog: http://www.tcc.edu/forms/catalog/ Course Description This course is designed to acquaint students with the concepts of analytic geometry and calculus including indefinite integrals, definite integrals and their applications, infinite series, conics, parametric equations and vectors. This course is designed to serve as an introduction to analytic geometry and calculus for students majoring in mathematics, engineering, computer science, and science. Prerequisites and/or Co-requisites MTH 173 - Calculus with Analytic Geometry I or placement exam. Required Course Texts and Supplementary Materials A. Thinkwell’s Calculus with Edward Burger (authorization number for website at www.thinkwell.com) B. Graphing calculator (TI 83 or TI 84 recommended) The TI89 and higher are not allowed on tests. C. Online Course uses Blackboard D. Users also need Microsoft Office with Word, Excel, and Power Point E. A computer preferably with broadband access to an Internet Service Provider. You will need Microsoft office 2003 or higher. For those of you with Word versions under the 2007 version, you can download the reader for the docx extensions in the event you need to read such a document. The link for that is at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en Word is often used to upload files into discussion board because the math type lite equation editor in word is easier to use and more reliable that the equation editor in Discussion Board. Power points are used for presentations and are substitutes for lectures. Excel is used for progress reports during the semester. You will need word files to do your individual projects which will require typing math using an equation editor. The exception would be if you have a tablet PC. If you do use a handwritten report it needs to be neat and flow logically from top to bottom. TCC computers are using Windows XP and have Office 2007 loaded on most of them. The only drawback is that the Math Type equation editor is not downloaded on these machines. Math Type has a free 30 downloadable version that after 30 days changes to Math Type lite which is all you need for any problem. Every math symbol, and greek letter are easily attainable using math type lite. You should download the 30 day free version and use it with Word for the projects and for answering questions or asking questions in discussion board. You cannot copy and paste equation editor work directly into the comment boxes in Discussion Board. Supplemental Materials (Optional) A. CD Rom set of video presentations (necessary for dial up connections) B. Workbook with notes and exercises Bookstore Link http://tcc.bncollege.com/ Click on Norfolk since that is where this course is originating. Since you are only purchasing an access code not a text book, you are taking a chance if you try to buy it used. If the access code has already been used by someone else, you will not be able to register on Thinkwell. Course Learning Outcomes Evaluate an integral by integrating by parts, using trigonometric substitution, partial fraction expansion or tables of integrals. Recognize and evaluate an indeterminate form, evaluating by the use of L'Hopital's rule, if necessary; evaluate an improper integral. Find the limit of a sequence; Tidewater Community College Page 1 of 7 Official TCC Course Syllabus Template Evaluate a geometric series or a telescoping series; Determine the convergence or divergence of a series using an appropriate test, such as the integral test, the p-series test, the direct and limit comparison tests, the alternating series test, the ratio test, or the root test. Express a function as a power series, including as a Taylor or a Maclaurin series, and determine the interval of convergence for the series representation. Write a parametric equation for a curve and find the equation of the tangent line to the curve at a point , the arc length for a portion of the curve, and the area of a surface of revolution for a curve given in parametric form. Write the equation of a curve in polar coordinates, and find the equation of a tangent line to the curve at a point , the area between two such curves and arc length for a portion of the curve, and the area of a surface of revolution for a curve given in polar form. Write the equation of a conic section in polar form. Represent a vector as an ordered pair (in the plane) or as an ordered triple (in space). Calculate the dot product and the cross product of two vectors and use these products to determine the angle between two vectors, the projection of one vector onto another, and the area of a parallelogram formed from two vectors as its sides. Topics Covered in the Course A. Applications of integration The following topics are covered in Math 173 or Calculus I but are available to review. * The Average Value of a Function * Finding Volumes Using Cross-Sections * Disks and Washers * Shells * Arc length and Functions * Sections marked with an asterisk are not part of Math 174 or Calc II but that knowledge may be needed in future chapters. Therefore students are responsible for this content. B. Integration techniques, L'Hopital's rule C. Improper Integrals) D. Techniques of Integration E. Parametric Equations and Polar Coordinates F. Sequences and Series G. Vectors and the Geometry of Space Description of Assignments/Assessments/Grading policies For a grade of A you will need to earn 90-100% For a grade of B you will need to earn 80-89% For a grade of C you will need to earn 70-79% For a grade of D you will need to earn 60-69% Tidewater Community College Page 2 of 7 Official TCC Course Syllabus Template Tests and Other Grades 10% Test 1 online 20% Test 2 cumulative proctored (midterm) This test is required to be taken to pass the class. 10% Test 3 cumulative, online 20% Individual Assignment 20% Homework 20% Final Exam proctored This test is required to be taken to pass the class. Extra Credit: For using Blackboard's Discussion Board BEFORE TEST 2 YOU WILL RECEIVE 3 EXTRA CREDIT POINTS ON TEST 2 An Individual Assignment will be announced around mid-term. This will be found in Blackboard and be turned in using the Assignment Feature in Blackboard. It will require writing math using a math equation editor in word or power point. I will help you with the mechanics if needed. How Homework is Graded In the same way that a textbook has more exercises than you could ever complete during a semester, the Thinkwell calculus website has more exercises than you can do this semester. In order for you to score a grade of 100 on Thinkwell exercises, you must successfully complete 700 correctly done problems in the exercises covering at least 80 different objectives. If you successfully complete 90% of the 700 exercises, your Thinkwell exercises grade will be 90, etc. Each exercise can only be done once, but can be reviewed after scoring. Thinkwell does not provide students with this total, so if you want to keep track you will need to do so from the beginning of the semester. I will periodically send out a grade report which will give you your totals. Course Schedule: See separate document called calendar. Course Policies You are responsible for checking your TCC email account daily and answering emails from your Instructor within 24 hours. You are also required to print and follow the weekly schedule provided under the Syllabus button in blackboard. Please report any discrepancies to your Instructor and ask questions if something is not clear. Attendance in an online class consists of the following: Submitting required HW assignments Participation in the Discussion Board on Blackboard Keeping up to date with the weekly schedule Turning in required projects on time Taking the major tests on time Coming to campus for two proctored tests*(See EXCEPTIONS below) If you have not communicated via the avenues above and have a failing average you may be dropped from the course. * EXCEPTIONS: Students who are at a great distance from campus (50+ miles) are responsible to find a proctored location where someone of authority can administer their test and give them access to a computer with an Internet connection. Possible places are Tidewater Community College Page 3 of 7 Official TCC Course Syllabus Template other community colleges, or libraries. The name, email address, phone number, and title of the proctor must be given to the Instructor in plenty of time for arrangements to be made with the proctor. Note: because of the number of emails I receive every day, please send me this information the week before the test week and no earlier. Failure to comply with the above items or communicate with your Instructor may mean your Instructor can drop you from the course. 2. Late Work/Make-up Exam Policy: Assignments (Video and Homework) should be done the week in which they are assigned. However, if you are ill and need a few days past the week they are due, that will be okay. You do not need to request and extension. You have one. Since the online tests are scheduled ahead of time you should do your best to stay on the schedule. If you have to be late a day or two that is acceptable. The only firm dates are Test 2 deadline, Final Exam deadline, and the due date for your Individual Assignment. All tests should be taken especially the proctored tests. If you fail to take both proctored tests you will not pass the class. Withdrawal Policy Students who wish to withdraw without academic penalty should contact a counselor to determine the appropriate procedure and date. Withdrawals through completion of 60 percent of a session will result in a W grade. After 60 percent of a session is completed, a withdrawal will result in a grade of F in a credit course, except under mitigating circumstances that must be documented by the instructor and approved by the academic dean.
