CRASHLANENEWS.com Interview with NOAA Tallahassee, Florida October 2013 The Tallahassee, FL NOAA office was very helpful and informative when asked about the Enterprise, AL tornadic event of March 1, 2007. The Enterprise, AL tornado event is summarized by NOAA to have had a total of 68 tornado reports. Some of these include fatalities and injuries. This tornado occurred during November and as a result was able to catch many in the area off guard. This event is memorable for travelers in that it had occurred in the afternoon just before the afternoon traffic started to pick up when work ends. Many residents were able to prepare in advance if they had received a good weather forecast, but there will still many reports whether the information was out or not. Warning comes out within 1 minute and up to 18 minutes before a tornado hits. The warning came out and gave 18 minutes time before it hit enterprise. It also took 23 minutes to hit the school where most of the damage and fatalities occurred. The purpose and usefulness for contacting NOAA is finding the answers to simple questions related to storm prediction. The storm prediction center can predict a storm 8 days prior and more or less according to NOAA Tallahassee. When asked about how long the Enterprise AL 2007 storm was known about in advance before the tornado hit, NOAA mentioned to Google a website IEM COW. This website belongs to the University of Iowa Science and Technology. The address is http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/cow/. This website may appear strange with a picture of a cow on it but there is also a data base of past storms. The data only goes back a few years to 2008 so if searching for a storm before then to find how much advance warning was known this one is limited. As an alternative to the above. The below is a way to research back to the time of the Enterprise AL Tornado in 2007. The ultimate resource to look up past archives visit the Storm Prediction Center website. Their address is at www.spc.noaa.gov. One the front page of this website there is a bar of tabs on top of page. One tab is called the SPC Products click on that and scroll down to another tab called Convection Outlook. Click and open Convection Outlook. Once on this page scroll to the bottom of the page and there will be a Retrieving Previous Outlooks highlighted in grey. In the box below this there is a date box where someone can enter what the weather would be leading up to a specific storm that may have already occurred. When searching for the Enterprise, AL Tornado the date I can type in before the storm date should have a space of a few days to see how far back the area had a forecast of severe weather. The forecast for this storm did indicate severe weather on February 25, 2007 which is estimated to occur a few days later. The address that this goes to is http://www.spc.noaa.gov/cgi-bin-spc/getac1.pl. Each date that gets typed in will have a list of the following days listed individually from 1 to 3 with a few reports. When looking at days 1-3 there is nothing indicating severe weather for March 1 2007 in area. Then the final convective outlook day is listed as 4-8. This means that the report will cover day 4 after the date typed in and 5,6,7, through 8. The different day forecasts can be useful to search leading up to a storm for future reference to know what kind of weather activity can be characterized for a particular area. When looking at day 4 there is a severe weather warning for February 28 and March 1, 2007. The following is the map showing an area where the storm is expected circled in red. There is also a summary also called the forecast discussion about the convection outlook for day 4-8. The web address for day 4 is the following http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/exper/day4-8/archive/2007/day4-8_20070225.html DAY 4-8 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK RESENT 1 NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK 0343 AM CST SUN FEB 25 2007 VALID 281200Z - 051200Z THE LATEST DETERMINISTIC GFS/EURO AND ENSEMBLES ALL SHOW REASONABLE AGREEMENT OF A STRONG UPPER SYSTEM MOVING IN FROM THE WRN CONUS INTO THE CENTRAL PLAINS ON WED AND THE UPPER MIDWEST THU. THIS TROUGH RESULTS IN A STRONG LOW LEVEL JET AND INCREASING MOIST AXIS IN TX/OK ON WED...AND ACROSS THE LOWER MS VALLEY ON THU...AHEAD OF AN EWD MOVING COLD FRONT. STRONG FORCING ALONG WITH VERY STRONG ENVIRONMENTAL WINDS/SHEAR WOULD SUPPORT AN ORGANIZED SEVERE WEATHER THREAT. ALTHOUGH THE STRONGEST LIFT ASSOCIATED WITH THE UPPER TROUGH IS FORECAST TO BE LOCATED NORTH OF THE OUTLOOK AREA...THE DEEPER BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTURE/INSTABILITY IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN SOUTH OF KS/MO AND THE OHIO VALLEY. A SEVERE THREAT MAY ALSO PERSIST INTO FRI MAR 2ND FROM THE FL PENINSULA NWD INTO THE ERN CAROLINAS...BUT UNCERTAINTY REGARDING THE DEGREE OF INSTABILITY AND STRENGTH OF LOW LEVEL CONVERGENCE PRECLUDES AN OUTLOOK AREA AT THIS TIME. ..IMY.. 02/25/2007 The point of mentioning this picture and the summary is it can be very useful to back track a storm that was significant. A traveler can look at how long in advance the severe weather was expected and then take into account the damage that occurred. A plan on how to react in preparing for a storm can be modified based on what occurred and learned. When asked how this picture was developed in advance. The Tallahassee NOAA office mentioned that it is based off a model. This means that the picture is using data to try to forecast severe weather. This data includes different sources that combine into one map. The National Center for Environmental Prediction is a part of NOAA. They help build this models using data. Their website is http://www.ncep.noaa.gov/. The Tallahassee NOAA also mentioned there is a Tsunami Warning Center and their phone number. More was being asked about predicting a tornado but a tsunami is also an severe when occurring and is also being watched by NOAA even though it is a natural disaster and not a storm system. The National Tsunami Warning Center website is at http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov/.
