BURLESON SCHOOL BUS TEAM HONORED FOR SAFETY
Throughout 2013, Durham School Services in Burleson, Texas, launched an all-out safety effort which
successfully reduced preventable accidents by 67 percent and injuries by 62 percent. The team also
drove down stop arm violations by actively pursuing a ride-along program with local police.
These significant safety improvements recently earned the Burleson team, which provides busing for the
Burleson and Kennedale Independent School Districts, the Driving Out Harm Team Award for Safety
from National Express Corporation (NEC), a leader in student transportation. Durham School Services is
part of NEC, and Burleson is one of 11 of teams and individuals among NEC’s 220 locations across United
States and Canada that is being recognized for demonstrating the company’s values in action.
“We are proud to recognize employees and teams for their hard work and dedication to living our
company’s values in the areas of Safety, Customers, People and Community,” said David A. Duke, CEO of
National Express Corporation. “Our Values reflect our priorities and we gladly celebrate those who
exemplify them.”
According to Burleson General Manager Clint Muhlenberg, creating a strong atmosphere of safety, for
both the students they serve and the employees, is a collective effort from the entire team—
supervisors, drivers, maintenance technicians and office staff. “We thoroughly check our buses before
and after each run and go above and beyond state maintenance requirements. We also review routes
and bus stops to ensure student safety. Employee safety and well being also is a focus of our efforts.”
With initiatives that include preparing fresh safety messages daily, reconfiguring the bus lots to improve
driver safety, participating in emergency preparedness demonstrations with the local SWAT team and
passing out neck coolers and cold water to drivers on very hot days, Muhlenberg makes sure his team
knows safety must be a large part of all they do.
“It is all about actively living the safety message. You simply can’t be passive about safety.”
Muhlenberg also is being recognized individually with the Leader of the Year Award for improving
customer service and engagement at the Burleson location.
