22nd March 2010
First number is time GMT, second depth in meter, third is bearing
1556 2804 Landing on heavily sedimented lobate flow and took sample
1600 Lobate/pillows with few surface scratches. Fresh with little sediment cover
A crack 5 meters away from the sub about -20-30 cm wide and another a little bit further along1643 2800 15.8 Lobate flow rather than pillows. More sediments than recently. Continuous filling of
depressions.
1701 2807 297 Still over heavily sedimented loby flow
1703 2804 250.6 Still in loby heavily sedimented flow
Contact More like pillow lavas but slightly loby
1711 2785 254.3 Still in fairly coarse pillows and driving close to a steep hill. Sediment cover
continuous in elongated lows. In between and on top of pillows
1722 2778 327 Driving along steep pillow slopes. You can see that the pillows are very elongated and
from the flow structures that they are flowing down and under the sub.
1724 2779 337.7 Still sailing along the pillow slopes with similar sediment cover Long. pillows with
similar flow structures
1729 2773 335.6 The sediment cover seems to be greater than before. – not greatly but significantly.
Topography of pillows different as we are further away from the steep slopes.
Pillows getting more lobate
Diving east on a north face Comment on the octopus-like appearance and continuity of the pillow on
the slopes.
1750 Talus/breccia ends
Sendiment slightly thicker but not very signifantly when crossing the saddle.
1831 2781 112.04 Fairly certain that there is a contact between points 3 and 4 with slightly heavier
sedimentation near point 4 and less on the western part.
Enter steep broken talus.- Pillow breccia.
1842 2683 110.28 On the route to point 8. Steep broken talus. Broken pillows rather than broken
sheets. Very steep slope.
1911 2683 140.8 Skipped over a topographic low. Fairly thick sediment – does more than
continuously fill depressions.
1920 2678 106 Sailing past very steep slope. With takus of broken up pillows but otherwise
elongated pillows and lopes. Sometimes 100% talus out of the window.
1925 2678 186 Pure talus in front of very steep slopes
Big talus pieces.
1927 2675 110 Past over to flatter terrain but still covered by talus. Sailing over flat area but still
covered by talus.
1940 2677 107 Less talus – Moving over from talus to pillows –not very glassy. Looks like glass has
been -weathered – off. The steep slope may help. Difficult to access sediment thickness but appears
not to be heavy.
1950 2680 115 Passing very steep slopes on port side. Rocks changed from elongated pillows and
lopes to broken off pillow ends. Pillows do not have very marked glass surfaces. Sometimes see glass
micro screes that appear to be very small disintegrated sheet units.
1956 2681 269. Crossing over talus first coarse, then finer and then coarser again
1959 2694 141 Passed to coarse pillow from the talus. Sediment continuously filling lows.
2001 2691 116 Following a very sharp drop Very deep and broken pillow ends exposed in the wall.
Following the fault some distance heading 106. Drop could be 40 meters minimum.
Sailing in direction 80 following the vertical cliff.
2006 2692 146 Not over the vertical cliff but with a pillow lava slope on the pert side – very glassy
stuff. Sediment not totally continuous in lows.
2016 2703 Slightly more sedimented and flattening topography.
Plus 2min. Lavas not very glassy and sailing along a steepening slope.
2035 2726 84.9 Sailing along a hill slope with elongated pillow lava coming downhill. Sedimentation
on the thick side.
