The Geophysics/Geodynamics group at ARC Centre of Excellence for Core to Crust Fluid Systems
(CCFS) is offering PhD scholarships within the long-term CCFS project “Two-phase flow within
Earth’s mantle: modeling, imaging and application to flat subduction setting”. The overarching
goal of this project is the development and application of in-house state-of-the-art computational
tools to simulate and image complex geochemical-geodynamic processes involving two-phase
reactive flow in multi-component deformable media. Through this project, the candidate will
interact closely with renowned scientists in the GEMOC-CCFS group as well as with international
collaborators through research visits in Barcelona.
The ARC Centre of Excellence for Core to Crust Fluid Systems (CCFS) integrates previously
disparate fields - geochemistry, petrophysics, geophysics and numerical and thermodynamic
modelling - to reach a new level of understanding of Earth’s dynamics and the fluid cycle(s)
through time. At Macquarie, CCFS resides in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences
within the Faculty of Science; it has major geochemical analytical infrastructure and strengths in
interdisciplinary studies of the deep Earth, tectonics, isotope geochemistry, experimental
petrology, geophysics and geodynamic modelling, building on the GEMOC National Key Centre
(http://www.GEMOC.mq.edu.au/).
Candidates should:
 Have a degree in Mathematics, Computer Sciences, Physics, or Geophysics.
 Be familiarity with Finite Element and Finite Differences methods.
 Have experience with Matlab and/or FORTRAN programing languages.
 Be highly motivated.
 Research experience is preferable but not required.
