Emphasis will be placed on geometric concepts that include essentials of geometry, reasoning and proof, parallel and perpendicular lines, congruent triangles, relationships within triangles, similarity, right triangles and trigonometry, quadrilaterals, properties of transformations, properties of circles, measuring length and area, and surface area and volume of solids. Practice testing will be incorporated using the Classroom Diagnostic Tools testing format. Students will develop a better understanding of geometric concepts as they apply to Pennsylvania State Standards. In addition, this course will broaden the curriculum of study and emphasize key concepts required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education Mathematics Curriculum. OBJECTIVES: After completing the course, students will be able to: Calculate the distance and/or midpoint between two points on a number line or on a coordinate plane. Measure and/or compare angles in degrees (up to 360). Find the measurement of a missing length given the perimeter, circumference, area or volume. Analyze data and/or answer questions based on displayed data. Apply the formula for the slope of a line to solve problems. Identify properties of triangles (medians, altitudes, angle bisectors, side/angle relationships, Triangle Inequality Theorem). Identify and/or use proportional relationships in problem solving settings. Identify and/or use properties of congruent and similar polygons or solids. Find the measure of a side of a right triangle using the Pythagorean Theorem. 1 Identify and/or use properties of triangles. Use estimation to solve problems. Identify and/or use properties of quadrilaterals. Identify and/or use proportional relationships in problem solving settings. Identify and/or use the properties of a radius, diameter, and/or tangent of a circle. Identify and/or use the properties of arcs, semicircles, inscribed angles, and/or central angles. Calculate the surface area of prisms, cylinders, cones, pyramids, and/or spheres. Calculate the volume of prisms, cylinders, cones, pyramids, and/or spheres. Any discrepancies between your records and information provided in progress reports should be discussed immediately. It is also suggested that all graded assignments (Level 1 & 2) be returned and filed in your class assessment folder for future reference. Missed Classes MAKE UP WORK IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. I will not track you down and beg for work missed. Be sure to read your student handbook about absences and suspensions. I am available by appointment in the morning and after school. It may be wise to make use of homeroom time to meet with me so that “WE” can catch you up. Notes Note taking is not required for this course. Your book and notes will be your study guides. You should maintain a folder for all materials not found in the books. Hard copies of notes and guided notes will be provided as per your IEP. Environment We are here for a reason and I expect us to work together to achieve our purpose. For many of you, the credits you earn for Geometry Skills A and B are required for graduation. You should strive to achieve a mastery level of geometry high enough to pass both the course and CDT examinations. You need to be respectful of yourself, your fellow students and the teacher. You need to be on time, ready to participate and prepared for class (Items with younotebook, pencil, text, work, etc.). Behavior that is disrespectful or interferes with the learning experience of others is not acceptable. Doing work for other classes, arranging your social life, sleeping, discussing extracurricular activities, or distracting others during class is highly inappropriate. Please make sure you understand the student handbook for all other rules and expectations. Supplies You should arrive for each class prepared with a pencil or pen, your textbooks, a calculator, and paper or a notebook. 6 Extra Credit There will NOT be extra-credit offered for this course. However, you may redo any assignment or retake any test or quiz by scheduling time with me during homeroom or after school. This is by appointment only. Extra Help I am available in the mornings during homeroom and after school to work together to help you learn the material. Please do not wait until a day or two before the test or towards the end of the semester and expect a miracle. This is by appointment only. This material is challenging! You will need to study and put in the time. Graduation Passing the Geometry Skills class will earn you one credit toward graduation. I will put in as much time as you do to make you successful. I will stay after if you do. I will help you if you are really working at it! There is not an EASY OUT for this course. If you are in danger of not passing the examinations, please come see me while there is time. Electronic Devices Please be aware there is a new clarification of the District policy regarding electronic devices. If the device is seen or heard in the classroom, the teacher is required to confiscate it and send it to the office. The device would be returned to the student only after a personal or telephone conference with a parent. For students who are permitted through their IEP to listen to music while testing, this music can only be played on an electronic device that does NOT have the capability of recording sound, video, or pictures. ___________________________________ Student Signature ________________________________ Parent Signature _________________________________ Teacher Signature 7
