Madinabeitia Valentina Madinabeitia COM 315: Writing for Public Relations Professor: Dr. Ted Gournelos News Stories Informational Story: A New Angle on Construction Target: Green Source, A Magazine of Sustainable Design Pitch: World Housing Solution works to create sustainable structures that can be used in emergency situations like natural disasters and shelters for the army. Yet, these structures can innovate the entire industry because of their many advantages that include a resistant and ecofriendly building strategy. Story: A New Angle on Housing World Housing Solution is located in Edgewater, Florida and was founded in 2011 by Ron Ben Zeev as a way of helping with critical natural disasters like the Earth Quake in Haiti. These structures are made out of Structural Insulated Composite Panel which are extremely strong and resistant, long lasting and, thermally superior making it adaptable to any environment. Adding to all of these, these innovative panels are also green and eco-friendly. At the time, the organization has built 8 structures for the U.S Military as shelter structures, which have been successful in their function of protecting the soldiers and have provided a green lifestyle while they are living in the building. The structures come ready to use, including electrical conduit, plumbing supply lines and pultruded embedded items already installed. The fast set up of the structures have as a consequence a energy efficient building process because the structures come ready to be assemble, whereas the technique used now a days that require months of machines and 1 Madinabeitia energy to build a home. The World Housing Solution’s structures need of a few men to carry the light panels and about six hours to assemble all the pieces. Analyzing this technology creates the aspiration of building with this technique and therefore creating a new, efficient and green way of building homes. Since one of the characteristics of these structures is their adaptability, it is only fair to think that we could follow this futuristic approach and leave behind the environmentally harmful structures we have today. Founded by Ron Ben-Zeev in 2011, World Housing Solution was inspired by the earthquake in Haiti in 2010. Located in Edgewater, Florida, World Housing Solution is an innovative and sustainable organization seeking to create efficient and long lasting constructions with Structural Insulated Composite Panels for victims of natural disasters or for military troops. They want to explain every detail that makes an idea green. Since World Housing Solution has as one of their top advantages that their structures are green and eco friendly, I wanted to write and environmental and innovative piece. Including articles in these types of media will make their audience bigger since they aren’t targeting them right now. Also, having a story like these can catch the attention of big investors that are looking for environmentally friendly solutions. This magazine even has a section for “Solution of the month”. I explained in the story how the lack of machinery use makes these structures more green and how even though they are very fast and easy to build, this does not change their strong and long lasting resistance. I also included that the US Military is using the structures to create a sense of credibility in the organization when potential investors are reading the informational story. I included the image because their website is very graphic oriented, so a picture would only make the story fit better in their magazine. Feature Story: Haiti under tents Target: UN Chronicle, The Magazine of the United Nations Pitch: Four years after the earthquake in Haiti, victims are living in tents. A solution that was supposed to be short-term has become a way of life and it is urgent to solve their living situation. Story: 3 Madinabeitia Haiti under tents Haiti suffered a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in 2010. One of the biggest issues regarding the cause of all the damages was the lack of strong structures in the country; this is why they all went crumbling down. Four years after this tragic disaster, more than 170,000 civilians are still living in tents. Tents were supposed to be a short-term solution to give shelter to the victims of the earthquake, yet, this short term solution has become a long-term solution and families are living in unbearable situations. Tents don’t provide protection from hot or cold weather and they don’t offer plumbing or electricity. They are very small in size but they are serving as housing to large families. Many invested in helping Haiti overcome the natural disaster, but they are still living the consequences of it, and the truth is that no one provided them with a long lasting solution. There are new technologies capable of providing a better life for these victims, like World Housing Solution’s Structural Insulated Composite Panel, which are easy to assemble and offer strong and long lasting structures that can serve as homes. It is hard to think that we are living in a technological advanced world and the best we can offer civilians victims of a natural disaster is a piece of fabric that is supposed to protect them and serve as a roof. Haiti is in need of a better solution and it is our responsibility to stand up and give them one that will actually help them overcome the disaster they are still experiencing. Since one of the goals of World Housing Solution is to help third world countries with housing problems, I thought that reaching to a different audience that might be looking for a solution to the problem is a good idea. The style of writing was very dramatic; because when reading other articles from the magazine I realized that they follow a sentimental and worrying writing style. I wanted to communicate that feeling through this story. Yet, I wanted to offer a solution and not 5 Madinabeitia only explain the problem, and this is when World Housing Solution comes into the narrative. The organization is the technological solution I am offering, and this is how I promote the organization without making the story about them. I also included a picture because it creates more drama and worry. I also end with a call for responsibility to help Haiti, and since the answer to the problem is WHS, I end the story inviting people to research more about the company. “On my honor, I have not given, nor received, nor witnessed any unauthorized assistance on this work.” Valentina Madinabeitia 6
