PS19M Counselling Psychology Short Title: Full Title: Module Code: Valid From: Administrator: Module Coordinator: Description: Counselling psych Counselling Psychology PS 19M NFQ Level: June 2013 8 ECTS Credits: 5 Ms. Deirdre McKiernan The aim of this module is to give students a working knowledge of how psychology can be applied in the delivery of counselling and psychotherapy. Students will be introduced to differing theoretical approaches to counselling and the variety of methodological approaches used in counselling and psychotherapy. Students will be introduced to basic counselling skills, ethical issues in counselling, empathy, the therapeutic relationship and behaviour change approaches. Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to 1. Have an understanding of the role and work of a Counselling Psychologist 2. Be able to critically evaluate the key concepts, theories and methods in this field 3. Be able to critically discuss selected topics in this area e.g., the therapeutic relationship, basic counselling skills, the role of empathy, principles of behavioural change 4. Have a working understanding of the research methods appropriate to counselling psychology 5. Have gained some experience of using basic counselling skills and therapeutic interventions under supervision 6. Be able to critically evaluate the outcome of treatment interventions 7.
