We had a great turn out with parents from many different grades venturing into the beer garden, some with kids in tow others without. With some excellent food, a few glasses of wine and some great dancing to the folk band (courtesy of the kids!) the night was a great opportunity to meet some new people and spend some time chatting and getting to know others in the school community without the chaos of school drop off or pick up. Keep an eye out for details of Friday night drinks next term - we'd love to see you there! COBURG FARMERS MARKET Countdown to Market - It is only a month before the first Coburg Farmers Market is held at our school. This a fabulous opportunity for us to publicise the school and fundraise as well as it being a great place to shop for high quality produce. The markets will provide an invaluable link between the school and the local community and as such it would be great if as many of the school population as possible both attend and publicise the market. A copy of the flyer is attached to this newsletter to circulate to friends and neighbours if you would like an electronic version please email CNPS_PF@hotmail.com and we will send one through. Otherwise spread the word verbally, by text, or email, anything you can to get the message out would be great. The first market will be held on the 27th April from 8:00am til 1:00pm and from then on will run on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. The grades rostered on to volunteer fundraise at markets within the first couple of months are Grade 1B and Prep A. If you have a child in either of those grades, haven't already put your name down and you and/or your child are available to volunteer on the following dates: Grade 1B - 27th April & 11th May, Prep A - 25th May & 8th June then we would love to hear from you. Please email Parents & Friends at CNPS_PF@hotmail.com or call Liz on 0400 197 732. PREMIERS' READING CHALLENGE If your child still wishes to sign up for the Premiers' Reading Challenge, it is not too late. You can still send your child's consent form to the school. It won't be processed until Term 2 but the reading can start now. Just keep a list of the books read and the records can be updated after registration. 2 26/03/2013 SCHOOL COUNCIL REPORT The CNPS Council met on the 21st March. It was a productive meeting and in addition to reviewing and accepting the usual finance and subcommittee reports (from the Education, Buildings and Grounds, Parents and Friends, OSHP and Communication subcommittees), the meeting was able to accept the school budget for 2013 and to approve the purchasing card register and financial delegation within the school. We were also able to look at the new school website before it is made public. It looks terrific! It is full of useful content and links and presents a very smart image to the community. It should be a valuable asset in our communication between the school and the wider community. Ray Madden President, CNPS Council LOTE A working party of interested parents and Helen Zull has evolved with an aim to reintroduce a LOTE program (Language other than English) at Coburg North Primary. Our aim is to have a quality language program across the school that will equip the students with the ability to hold basic conversation and read and write in a second language. The group is investigating the following aspects of the program: Selection of a language Investigation of best practice at schools that run an effective LOTE program Creative ways of immersing the students/school in a second language Investigation of languages offered by Secondary settings that our students will be attending Guidelines in the Australian Curriculum Research on LOTE learning The group has been gathering and discussing information and is hoping to come up with a recommendation by the end of the year. A new set of sequentially based tasks, are assigned on a weekly basis for students to complete in the classroom and at home. This can be done at any time between Monday and Saturday as the school currently has unlimited access for all students during school time and in the evening for homework. Teachers’ track learning via collated data that shows individual progress in both subjects. Visitors to the ICT blog will notice a change in the main menu for presenting the tasks and results for Studyladder. We also looked around the fabulous facilities and the buildings that the Junior High School will be located in. I would encourage you to look at the website and register on there to receive information. The school holds regular tours that you can book into, this is a worthwhile exercise. The following information is from the website of Coburg Senior High It is expected that by 2015 Coburg Senior High School will have received funding to open up a junior campus. This will commence with Year 7 students only and build from there. Some major refurbishment needs to occur before this is possible and we await confirmation of inclusion in the forthcoming budgets of 2013 and 2014. The opening of the junior campus provides an exciting opportunity for the school to extend its curriculum and teaching approach to the junior levels. Learning for the connected generation is not only a pursuit of senior students. Junior levels should able to learn and explore within a similar educational framework as exists in the senior school. Coburg Senior High School has always been an open entry state-wide provider of education and it is expected that the same will apply to the junior campus FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS When will the first Year 7 intake occur? This is programmed to be in 2015. How will I enrol my child in Year 7 for 2015? There is a Year 6 transition process that functions throughout the region. Coburg Junior High School (CJHS) a campus or sub-school of Coburg Senior High School, will be included in this process in the 2014 school year. However, there will be an online Expression of Interest process initiated in 2013 so that an early indication of the number of prospective students can be gathered. Coburg Senior High School (CSHS) is a statewide provider. Does this mean the CJHS will also be a select entry school? Statewide provider means that there are no geographical enrolment boundaries connected to the school. It does not signify a select entry school. Students from any suburb of Melbourne are able to enrol. At present students at CSHS travel from as far away as Craigieburrn, Willliamstown, Werribee and Chadstone. Others come from the local community and adjacent suburbs. Students for whom Coburg Junior High School is the closest neighbourhood school will have direct entry via the transition process that operates region wide. When my child completes Year 9 at CJHS will access to CSHS be an issue? Students who are enrolled in CJHS will automatically transition into CSHS. Does my child have to go into Year 10 at CSHS? No, as with any school, parent choice may determine that a student changes schools at any year level. 5 26/03/2013 What will the curriculum look like for the Junior School? This finer detail is yet to be determined. However, the curriculum and teaching and learning approach will reflect that at Coburg Senior High School and will allow learning to take place in a mode suited to the connected generation. This means an emphasis on curiosity, creativity, critical literacy and numeracy skills, metacognition (thinking about thinking), global and local awareness (space and place in the world). Use of digital technology will be a feature. Will each year level at CJHS be separate or will there be vertical grouping? This is a learning and logistical element to be considered. The separation of students based solely on their chronological age bears little relation to the individual skills, understanding and experience. Workplaces do not segregate staff first and foremost on a chronological age factor. Within the school context there is clearly value in age grouping as part of the standard structure, but providing flexibility of boundaries so the learning is appropriate and real for the skill sets and interest of the individual learner is also important. Coburg Senior High School has many students who accelerate up a year level for selected subjects. This is a familiar approach for us. What language will be on offer at CJHS? This is yet to be determined. There are many languages from which to choose and many aspects to consider such as the existing language programs currently operating in the local primary schools, the preferences of students enrolling at CJHS, the consideration and prediction of which languages offer the best prospects for future. The up and coming nations of the world are Brasil, Russia, India and China. There are the romance languages of Italian, Spanish and French, and also the classics of Greek and Latin. All have value, but selecting a language or cultural studies with a language component is complex. Availability of teaching expertise is another element of the complexity. The forthcoming survey for prospective families will be asking for input. Will there be camps for the Junior School? Coburg Senior High School students have the opportunity to attend a ski camp, surf camp, and sailing camp. Access to such activities would also be available to the CJHS student where appropriate. There will be a Year 7 Camp developed for 2015. What about the Thailand Community Service Experience? Our students have the opportunity to travel to Chang Mai in northern Thailand and do community work in a small village school. Toilets and a kitchen have been built by our students working with local builders. It is yet to be determined if this experience will be open to the junior levels. Will there be a school uniform for the Junior School? This is yet to be determined. What will be the timing of the school day? School starts at 9.00am and finishes at 3.10. CJHS will follow the CSHS format of four periods of 75 minutes per day. It is possible that either recess and/or lunchtime will be off-set and not happen at the same time as the seniors. This is yet to be determined. How can I find out more information? As more information become available, the CJHS web pages will be updated. You can complete the form in the Keep Me Informed page. CJHS specific tours will be held during 2013 and 2014. At these tours information will be shared about the structures and curriculum. The opportunity to provide feedback from those in attendance will be factored into the evening. 6 26/03/2013 DIARY DATES 2013 March 27 28 April 15 25 27 May 9 11 22 23 25 June 8 10 22 25 26 27 28 July 13 15 27 August 10 24 September 14 20 28 October 7 12 26 November 9 23 December 14 20 7 Twilight Sports Last day of term 1 2:30 dismissal First day of term 2 Anzac Day holiday Coburg North Farmer’s Market – Grade 1B School Council Coburg North Farmer’s Market - Grade 1B Open Day at Coburg North Primary Evening Prep Information Session for 2014 7:00 Pupil Free Day Coburg North Farmer’s Market – Grade Prep A Coburg North Farmer’s Market - Grade Prep A Queen’s Birthday Holiday Coburg North Farmer’s Market – Grade 1A Junior School Parent Teacher Interviews Senior School Parent Teacher Interviews School Council Meeting Last day of term 2 2:30 dismissal Coburg North Farmer’s Market – Grade 1A First day of term 3 Coburg North Farmer’s Market – Grade Prep B Coburg North Farmer’s Market – Grade Prep B Coburg North Farmer’s Market – Grade 3/4 A Coburg North Farmer’s Market – Grade 3/4 A Last day of term 3 Coburg North Farmer’s Market - Grade 2A First day of term 7 Coburg North Farmer’s Market – Grade 2A Coburg North Farmer’s Market – Grade 3/4B Coburg North Farmer’s Market – Grade 3/4B Coburg North Farmer’s Market – Grade 5/6A Coburg North Farmer’s Market – Grade 2B Bunnings BBQ Last day of term 4 1:30 dismissal 26/03/2013 THIS SCHOOL HOLIDAYS WHY NOT TRY SOMETHING NEW AND… WHEN: Tues. 9th April 2013 AT: Pascoe Vale Guide Hall, Raeburn Reserve, Raeburn St Pascoe Vale Melways Ref.
