October 5, 2015 5th Grade Science Newsletter Dear Parents, We will be wrapping up our study of land biomes and begin learning about how living and non-living things relate in systems and/or cycles; such as Food Chains and Food Webs. Students will also learn how plant and animal structures and behaviors help them survive in their habitats. Quiz dates are set in the boxes. Please feel free to contact me during planning or after school. Thank you for support, Ms. Price Quiz Friday October 9, 2015: Biomes (1-5) 1. Biome- a climate of a land (location); the average temperature/ weather, soil: Know Tundra, Taiga, Deciduous Forest, Rain Forest, Grassland, Desert 2. Terrestrial-land 3. Aquatic-water 4. Impact-direct effect or change 5. Organisms- living things (plants/animals) Quiz Thursday October 15, 2015 (6-20) 6. Biotic- living 7. Abiotic-non-living 8. Ecosystem- all of the living and nonliving parts of an environment 9. Producer- an organism that uses sunlight, to make its own food for energy 10. Consumer- an organism that gets energy by eating other organisms 11. Decomposer- an organism that get energy by eating dead organisms, nonliving materials, or waste 12. Scavenger –organism that eats dead animals 13. Food Chain-a path of energy from on organism to another 14. Food Web-interconnected set of food chains 15. Predator- an organism that hunts and feeds on another organism 16. Prey- an organism that is eaten by other organisms. 17. Carnivore- organism that eat only other consumers, including insects, not plants 18. Omnivore- an organism that eat both producers and consumers 19. Herbivore- an organism that only eats producers, plants 20. Overpopulation-an increase in the number of individuals of one species Quiz Thursday October 21, 2015 (1-9) 1. Species- all the organisms with similar characteristics that allow them to reproduce 2. Population-all the organism of the same species that live in the same area 3. Community-populations of different species that live in the same area at the same time. 4. Reproduction-the act of making something new. 5. Photosynthesis- the process in which plants use energy from sun to make their own food. 6. Perish- die 7. Adaptation- any characteristic that helps a plant or animal survive 8. Camouflage- characteristics that blend in with the surrounding environment and increase chances of survival 9. Mimicry- the resemblance of an organism to another organism or to its surrounding that gives it a better chance of survival. Quiz Thursday October 29, 2015 (10-19) 10. Migration- the seasonal movement of animals from one place to another 11. Hibernation- when an animal becomes still in an enclosed space and reduces bodily functions to save energy. 12. Dormant- when plants become inactive in winter months. 13. Instinct-a behavior that organisms are born with 14. Inherited traits-A characteristic that is passed from parents to offspring. 15. Learned behaviors- Animal behavior that develops from observation or instruction rather than being passed down by heredity 16. Habitat- the place or environment in which an organism naturally lives 17. Environment-space, conditions, and all the living and non-living things around an organism 18. Structural adaptation- part of the organism’s body that is adapted to help it survive. 19. Behavioral adaptation- a behavior or action that an organism uses to help it survive. **A few science vocabulary words from previous quizzes will be used again in the following weeks to ensure students retain all vocabulary.
