Dear Parents:
The Camas School District offers a Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) program for Language Arts and Social
Studies (LA/SS) and Compacted Math at the middle-school level. Both programs reflect high academic
expectations and are available for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students.
Pre-AP LA/SS Placement
Seventh grade students who are interested in a rigorous language arts/social studies experience, may enroll
in the Pre-AP program if they meet the following criteria:



Successful performance in both the most current Washington state reading test and the district’s oral
reading fluency assessment.
A grade of “C” or better in their current Language Arts and Social Studies classes.
A commitment to a full year in the Pre-AP program
To apply for Pre-AP, parents need to simply sign the form on the next page and mark the checkbox for PreAP. Signing the form indicates an understanding of the selection criteria and rigor.
Algebra Placement
For students not currently in our advanced math track, placement in algebra is determined by a series of
Algebra Placement Exams. Since algebra is offered as a high school credit and an in-depth experience with
pre-algebra and is considered crucial for success in all future math classes, we do not typically recommend
skipping 8th grade math (pre-algebra). If you would like your child to challenge their placement, however,
please check the box for algebra placement. We will then contact you to schedule a time for the placement
exam.
