FURTHER DEPARTMENTAL INFORMATION
Imaging Services in Forth Valley
Since July 2011 the Imaging Department has been based in a single site in the new Forth Valley
Royal Hospital, Larbert, with a satellite X-ray and Ultrasound Department at Stirling Community
Hospital.
Approximately 170,000 examinations are carried out annually.
The Radiologists all contribute to the general radiology workload, but all have subspecialty
interests.
There are excellent relationships with clinicians within the hospital, including the three vascular
surgeons, fostered by regular, well attended multidisciplinary clinico-radiological meetings. The
Oncology workload in particular is high, with video-conferencing used for some meetings with
the Beatson Oncology Unit in Glasgow.
There is well developed skill-mix across Forth Valley, with Radiographers reporting plain film and
Nuclear Medicine.
The sonographers perform and report the majority of the general
ultrasounds. Nurses and radiographers routinely administer contrast and certain drugs.
Forth Valley supports a comprehensive range of outpatient clinics including Neurology from
Edinburgh and Oncology from Glasgow. There is GP access to a number of investigations,
including approved pathways for lower back pain and appropriate MRI referral.
Forth Valley has a fully integrated Carestream RIS/PACS system; the PACS is part of the
Scottish National PACS system whereby all images from the national archive are available for
local viewing.
Radiology is part of the Surgical Directorate. The General Manager of the Directorate is Mr
David McPherson, and the Associate Medical Director, Dr. Henry Robb. Dr Judy Stein is the
Service Manager and Dr Paul Kelly is the current Clinical Lead for Radiology. Dr Emma
Beveridge the Departmental IR Lead.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Background to the post
Consultant Radiologists have been based at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert since 2011.
There are plain film facilities and two ultrasound rooms in the Stirling Community Hospital,
supporting the Minor Injuries Unit, GP access and some out-patient services. This is fully linked
by PACS to the Larbert site.
You will be required to participate in a 1 in 15.5 diagnostic on call rota, and expected to maintain
all the skills required to undertake this. Interventional on call provision is under review.
Currently the rota encompasses 7 day a week working, therefore 1 in 15.5 weekends are worked
with compensatory time off the following week. Telemedicine links are provided to Consultants’
homes via Broadband and a VPN connection for out of hours imaging.
Interventional Radiology Service
The service is currently provided by three full time Consultants. The range of vascular and nonvascular procedures encompasses vascular (angioplasty/stenting/embolisation), hepatobiliary,
GI, urological and oncological procedures. An EVAR service commenced in 2013 in conjunction
with the three vascular surgeons, with whom there are good working relationships. There is no
Renal Unit on site and fistula/dialysis access work is not required regularly. Some vascular
access procedures are performed by a staff nurse.
Most elective vascular work is done on a daycase basis. There is access to Day Surgery beds
for these patients.
There is an established weekly IR outpatient clinic, shared by the three consultants. All vascular
referrals and fibroid embolisation patients are seen and consented here. All elective vascular
imaging is non-invasive; Doppler ultrasound performed by a vascular sonographer, MRA and
CTA are reported by all IR.
Currently all three consultants have three timetabled IR sessions per week, although the number
of sessions varies when colleagues are on leave. There is a flexible approach to service
provision, and the department strives to provide a high quality and timeous service. An IR
database facilitates audit and there are regular IR mortality and morbidity meetings in addition to
Departmental diagnostic peer review. There is currently no Interventional out of hours provision,
but this is under review. There may be some commitment to IR on call in the future, but it is
unlikely all IR on-call will be provided “in house”.
Administrative support
The consultant will have appropriate administrative support and your own office with a PACS
workstation.
Training and Education
NHS Forth Valley places a high priority on training and development across all staff groups and
strongly supports the continuing medical education programme for Consultants. There is
purpose built education centre with a library, lecture theatre and meeting rooms with PACS and
video-conferencing facilities.
8
Teaching, Research and Audit
The Consultant will be expected within his/her NHS responsibilities, to undertake audit, and to
participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. The appointee may be expected to
share in teaching programmes for medical students, FY1 and 2s and middle-grade medical staff
in Forth Valley. There is a fortnightly hospital wide Clinical Forum and other Educational events.
The Consultant will be expected to take an active part in the teaching of medical students who
are attached to Radiology.
The Department is affiliated to both the South East and West of Scotland Clinical Radiology
Training Schemes. Specialist Trainees from both schemes regularly rotate through the
departments, and the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to their teaching.
CONSULTANT RADIOLOGIST RESPONSIBILITIES

As agreed with the General Manager and Associate Medical Director to provide with
Consultant colleagues an area wide service with responsibility for the prevention,
diagnosis and management of illness, and for the proper functioning of the service;
