Faith and the Environment RECYCLING in HILLINGDON A-Rocha & The Hillingdon Inter Faith Network Back in February 2013, we held a networking event. We invited Robert Williams from the council and spent an hour enjoying discussing issues around waste, recycling and being good neighbours. The outcome is this paper. It is meant as a ‘DID YOU KNOW ABOUT THAT?’ It has been produced for the contacts with AROCHA and HIFN and we hope that it will be informative and useful. It is not comprehensive – please let us know about any other item and we will add it to the web version at www.hifn.co.uk Please use it to - Advertise the various services for recycling - Setting your own Earth Charter linked specifically to the teachings of your community and encourage members to ‘sign up’ to it. - Set aside a corner of your building and get the council to drop off a poster and a box of recycling rolls - Use the links to set up a short display showing the wide range of opportunities we have to recycle rather than just dump. - Put the date of the picnic in your diary and join us at Minet Park on the XXXX - Please DO NOT hit print and then recycle the document! There is no order to the topics, just what was covered on the morning or since. 1. Trees The Borough Tree Officer can only give advice about trees that are on Council owned land, or land that has been adopted e.g a church yard passed to the Council for care by a church. Contact Robert Williams rwilliams2@hillingdon.gov.uk for further information The tree section has provided a list of consultants they believe provide good advice / reliable work if there is a tree causing concern attached. 2. Recycling - 1 Consider visiting the Grundons recycling plant at Colnbrook. To arrange a visit Contact http://www.grundon.com/schoolsAndEducation/schoolsAndEducation.htm 3. Building Energy Conservation Jo Gill jgill4@hillingdon.gov.uk gives advice to some residents and could extend this by giving a talk to faith communities on energy saving. Please let us know if you would like us to arrange a meeting to meet her. 4. Recycling -2 Faith Communities can ask for a box of recycling rolls which can be accessed by their faith communities. This would be in addition to the current routes. Contact Robert at rwilliams2@hillingdon.gov.uk for Boxes of Recycling Bags and Information Posters. He will arrange to have these delivered to faith buildings. 5. An Earth Charter “Humanity is part of a vast evolving universe. Earth, our home, is alive with a unique community of life. The forces of nature make existence a demanding and uncertain adventure, but Earth has provided the conditions essential to life's evolution. The resilience of the community of life and the well-being of humanity depend upon preserving a healthy biosphere with all its ecological systems, a rich variety of plants and animals, fertile soils, pure waters, and clean air. The global environment with its finite resources is a common concern of all peoples. The protection of Earth's vitality, diversity, and beauty is a sacred trust.” http://www.earthcharterinaction.org/content/pages/Read-the-Charter.html Have you considered getting your community to produce their own charter, linked to the basics of your faith? 6. RW agreed to produce a Q&A page which could be circulated. 7. Faith Community Green Groups CB to circulate details of the Green Group at St John’s as an example of what a faith community can do.
