Voluntary Services
Volunteer in Tabard Annexe – Oncology Outpatient
Department, Guy’s Hospital
To offer help and advice to patients and their relatives during their visit to our busy Oncology clinics. Oncology Outpatients will move into the new Cancer Centre at Guy’s in Autumn 2016.
Within Oncology outpatients, we plan to trial new, innovative ways of working to improve patient and staff experience. A volunteer team will be vital in communicating these changes to patients and helping us gather feedback on them. Volunteers will be involved in distributing and collecting patient experience surveys. These surveys can be completed either on paper or by using a tablet. Volunteers will also be responsible for inputting information captured on paper into a computer database via a simple tablet based system. This work will offer a unique insight into the thoughts and opinions of patients on a regular basis.
Volunteers will be well supported and feel part of the administrative, nursing and clinical teams who work within the department. This is a varied support role for those who are passionate about making a difference to Cancer care. We are committed to developing and engaging a volunteer team who can transition with us to our new home in the Cancer Centre next year.
Volunteers will act as the initial welcome for patients, relatives and visitors into Tabard Annexe.
They will also:
explain how the new call-forward system works (e.g. system of patient names being displayed on screens in the waiting area for a specific appointment)
show patients or visitors to the waiting area or any other facilities in this area
help patients or visitors to find their way around the department and wider hospital
assist in guiding patients or visitors to the right room (e.g. consultation room, height and weight rooms and blood testing room)
to be on hand to assist or guide any patients leaving the department/hospital
offer wayfinding assistance to patients who use a wheelchair or have a visual impairment
distribute and collect patient satisfaction surveys
