Curator will inventory artifacts and process items for deaccession. The Curator also develops permanent and temporary exhibits; schedules incoming temporary exhibits and supervises installation, disassembly, packing and transit of exhibits. Curator will also assist with educational programs and museum events correlating to the Museum's mission as a department of Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Curator needs to cooperate as a member of a small and supporting team, as well as work independently. PROVIDE EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE Job Responsibilities RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL ASPECTS OF COLLECTION MANAGEMENT Solicits and accepts acquisitions to the museum collection based on the museum mission. Coordinates loans to and from the museum and other institutions. Accession and process acquisitions to the collection, assigning individual trinomial designation to each accession. Review museum policies and make suggestions on new policies or amendments to existing policy to the Museum Director. Enters collections data in Past Perfect database, including digital images and related information. Identifies conservation needs within the collection and recommends options. Conducts artifact research. RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL ASPECTS OF MUSEUM EXHIBITS, BOTH TEMPORARY AND PERMANENT Develops, implements, and installs temporary and permanent exhibits. Schedules incoming temporary exhibits; supervise installation, and disassemble; coordinates shipping and transit. Plans and develops new exhibits with the approval of the Museum Director. ASSISTS WITH EDUCAITONAL PROGRAMS AND PUBLIC EVENTS. INCIDENTAL DUTIES Stays current on trends in collections storage, artifact preservation, museum law, and related topics. Gives public presentations to local and area organizations. Works in a supervisory capacity for one or more employees and/or volunteers. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications B.A/B.S. in Museum Studies or related field (such as History, Art History, Public History, Historic Preservations, or Wildlife Education) 6 months employment or volunteer experience at a museum, cultural center, or historic site, or an equivalent combination education and experience. Driver’s License General Museum Knowledge & Skills; Proficient with PC. Excellent communication skills. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Preferred Qualifications M.A. or M.S. in Museum Studies or Public History 1-year employment in a museum or historic site from a regionally accredited institution or university. Experience with PastPerfect 5.0, Bilingual (English/Spanish). Public speaking experience. Conner Museum collections are as old as their governing institution, Texas A&M UniversityKingsville, which was established in 1925. In 1929, the John E. Conner Museum was created to preserve and interpret the many historical items amassed by the university's first Professor of History, John E. Conner. Originally located in a gazebo-like structure behind the University's first structure (now Manning Hall), in 1976 the Conner Museum relocated to its present location in Loftin Hall, the original campus dining hall. The Conner Museum maintains exhibits and collections pertaining to the history of South Texas, Kingsville, and Texas A&M University-Kingsville; its permanent exhibits encompass natural history, and cultural history.
