Summary
The Dublin Energy Lab (DEL) is DIT’s interdisciplinary energy research centre. It comprises
approximately 90 postgrads, postdocs and academics and undertakes applied research with leading
industries as well as national and international research organisations. It has annual research
turnover in the region of €2m. Its research work has been commercialised through spin-out
companies, licenses, patents and has be published in leading international journals. The DEL is a
member of several European and international research networks and currently participates in
several FP7 and H2020 projects.
The Role
In addition to developing their own research in an energy-related field of their choice, the main roles
of the Arnold Graves Scholar will be to:

work with DEL principal investigators to assist in identifying and delivering H2020 research
proposals in a variety of energy-related areas
contribute to the development of the energy modelling group within DEL
assist in supervising energy-related research students at DIT
These roles are described in more detail below.
Reporting to the DEL Centre Manager and the Centre Management Team, the Scholar will be
responsible for working with DEL PIs in establishing and summarising on the current state-of-the-art
in the range of energy-related areas which represent DEL’s core capabilities. They will take
responsibility for the delivery of a pipeline of coordinator proposals for Horizon 2020 (H2020) as well
as other agreed suitable proposals to national and international programmes. This will involve
working closely with DEL Principle Investigators (PIs) to scope projects, assemble teams of research
and industry partners, coordinating technical inputs form all participants, agreeing administrative
and financial requirements and ensuring that compliant proposals are submitted on time to the
funding authority. The work will include (but not be limited to) the following tasks:



Proposal scoping in collaboration with the relevant PI.
Contacting and assembling a research consortium.
Travelling to and meeting with the consortium members, chairing meetings, presenting
project concepts, identifying critical tasks, allocating tasks and responsibility, developing
delivery timelines, monitoring and reviewing proposal progress.









Participate in writing the assigned sections of grant applications, and in reviewing research
contracts.
Oversee the development of proposal budgets and negotiate with research and industry
partners.
Manage timelines, reports, submissions, electronic submissions, administration, formatting,
financials etc. of relevant research proposals.
Plan, participate and present at research coordination meetings, meetings with industry;
report regularly to Centre management and PIs on progress.
Review and understand research funding programmes to identify suitable and feasible
opportunities for the Centre.
Review research regulatory documentation (ICF, protocol) to ensure compliance with
sponsor requirements
Develop multiple grant application timelines (H2020 and other programmes) and manage
pre-award grant submission process.
Maintain regular direct communication with the Centre Manager and Management Team,
DEL members, industry partners, funding sponsors, and research collaborators in support of
the overall research delivery plan.
Oversee financial administration of grant application processes including applying for seed
funding and managing expenses claims etc.
Job Requirements
The candidate must be a self-motivated individual who enjoys working to tight deadlines. They will
have excellent interpersonal skills, be highly organised and have a flair for managing projects
involving multiple stakeholders in different countries. They must have excellent written and oral
communication skills and have the ability and willingness to quickly grasp technical concepts,
practices and specialized vocabulary of various technical areas. They will have excellent attention to
detail. An advanced knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required. They will be able to
manage document databases. Knowledge in the field of energy/engineering/science is an advantage.
The preferred candidate will have 3-5 years’ experience of proposal or technical writing in a research
environment, project management experience and research qualification. A primary degree is
required, although the ideal candidate my hold a masters or doctorate.
