Duquesne University Mylan School of Pharmacy Clinical Research Fellowship Specialty: Outcomes Research, Pediatrics Director: Jennifer Elliott, PharmD, Duquesne University, School of Pharmacy Faculty: Jordan Covvey, PharmD, PhD, BCPS, Duquesne University, School of Pharmacy Deborah Gentile, MD, Allegheny Health Network, Division of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Melissa Kalarchian, PhD, Duquesne University, School of Nursing Khalid Kamal, MPharm, PhD, Duquesne University, School of Pharmacy Program Duration: July 1, 2016 – June 30 2018 Overview: The purpose of the Clinical Research Fellowship at Duquesne University is to develop competency and expertise in the scientific research process, including hypothesis generation and development, study design, protocol development, grantsmanship, study coordination, data collection, analysis and interpretation, technical skills development, presentation of results, and manuscript preparation and publication. A fellowship candidate is expected to possess appropriate practice skills relevant to the knowledge area of the fellowship. The fellow will spend 80% of their time on research-related activities. The other 20% will be spent on teaching, service and professional development. Fellowship applicants must have a PharmD, and be eligible for pharmacy licensure in Pennsylvania prior to the start of the fellowship. Residency training (PGY1 and/or PGY2) is preferred. Applicants should have prior experience in research, and a strong desire to pursue a career in clinical research. The fellow will gain clinical research and practice experience through current research programs in the areas of pediatric asthma and obesity. The goals of the asthma program are to develop accurate and efficient methods for identifying asthma prevalence and control in the Pittsburgh region and to improve asthma outcomes through school-based asthma management programs. The pediatric obesity program focuses on weight management interventions for youth, particularly those with intellectual disabilities. Additional fellow-initiated research pursuits based on interest will be expected in coordination with pharmacy administration faculty using related clinical scholarship methodologies in surveys, pharmacoeconomics and/or database research. Fellowship faculty have secured over $1,000,000 in external funding to support these research programs. The fellow will be provided with office space on-site at Duquesne, and will have access to a variety of facilities for education, research and recreation. About the site: Duquesne University is a private university located in downtown Pittsburgh, PA, in existence since 1878. The Mylan School of Pharmacy graduated its first class in 1928 and currently trains Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students in both weekday and weekend pathways, as well as PGY1 and PGY2 residents in pharmacy practice, ambulatory care, community practice, specialty pharmacy and long-term care.
