Low-Cost Curriculum Revision Team Project This project is intended to support faculty work to revise curriculum and instructional materials for specific courses in order to take advantage of low-cost online materials and instructional resources. Curriculum revision teams may typically receive between 30 and 45 hours (at $33/hour) in stipends for revising a course to incorporate open/low-cost educational resources (textbooks and other instructional elements) such that the total cost of course materials to students is not more than $50. Program Summary Teams of faculty and/or staff working together to develop or adopt low-cost instructional resources for a course or related group of courses are eligible for stipends under this program. The revision must reduce the total cost of all required textbooks and instructional materials for each course to $50 or less. Teams should be formed to include faculty who teach the same course(s) and are willing and able to devote time and effort toward the course/resource revision. Teams are strongly encouraged to find a faculty mentor/coach who has experience making similar changes to their courses and include him/her on their team. They are also encouraged to include librarians or library faculty. Teams should indicate in their application how they want the funds to be expended or shared among the team members. Guidelines Receipt of support under this option would be made available under the following guidelines: Initially, only courses typically offered with multiple sections or one section that fills every quarter taught by at least one faculty member are eligible for support. Current course textbooks and instructional materials costs must total $100 or more for the course to qualify for this support. Courses eligible for revision with Workforce Education support include all professional-technical courses, all pre-requisite or co-requisite courses for professional-technical programs, and all general education and related elective courses that are identified in the curriculum plans of any existing professional-technical certificate, AAS, or AAS-T degree. If there are other courses that do not meet these criteria that a team is interested in revising, they should fill out the form and we will try to identify another funding source (e.g., student leadership, instruction). Priority will be given to teams of two or more faculty. Teams will receive stipend amounts based on number of hours of work required, the number of students affected annually, and the amount of resource/textbook savings anticipated. As a general guide, a team revising a course that enrolls at least 30 student per year that wants to adopt a new open/low-cost educational resource textbook (requiring revision of lesson plans with supplemental instructor-developed plans and added assessments) that reduces the cost to $50 or less could expect to receive stipends totaling between $1,000 and $1,500 (30-45 hours total work by the team). Projects may receive more or less depending on the availability of Page 2 funds, the size of the team, and the impact and complexity of the project, as described in the application. Instructional materials for the revised course must be adopted by all team members (and possibly other faculty teaching the course) and may not be supplemented or revised to raise the total cost above $50 for at least two academic years following the adoption of the revision (unless it can be shown that the changes resulted in a substantial negative impact on student success). Teams are required to work with the e-learning support center team on best pedagogical practices in use of online materials. For the first year of implementation, teams are required to report to the e-learning support center team at the end of each quarter on student feedback on the course materials and on their own satisfaction with the use of the open/low-cost educational resources. Faculty are encouraged to use free, open-source, library course reserves, or e-readings uploaded to Canvas and made available to enrolled students in compliance with copyright and fair-use requirements. A required final project task is to review the Master Course Outline (MCO) for the course(s) being revised and determine if an MCO revision is needed based on the use of the new materials. If so, a revised MCO should be submitted prior to project completion. All curriculum and instructional materials developed for use through the project should be forwarded electronically to the division dean and the e-learning associate dean who will review the material and ensure compliance with academic standards and the project description. Once approved (by the Division Dean or CAS, as appropriate), the completed project materials will be made available for District-wide access through webshares and Canvas. All projects must be completed and the materials submitted by April 30 of the academic year in which they are funded. Projects completed after that date may not receive funding for work undertaken. All supplementary curriculum materials developed through the state-funded project used in conjunction with open-source materials are the property of North Seattle College. These supplementary materials may be made available to the general public.
