“Merry Christmas”
“It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” These words, first made famous in the 1960’s by
Pop singer Andy Williams, resonate with all of us as December 25 th is now just two days
away. Most of us have our trees up and decorated with presents underneath, and many have
already begun to prepare food for family gatherings that will take place over the next two
days. There are many enjoyable Christmas traditions that we participate in ranging from
listening to Christmas music to leaving cookies for “Old Saint Nick” as he delivers presents
during the night. Yet, in the midst of all these traditions and gift giving is the name Christ.
So, the question becomes, where does Jesus Christ fit into this equation, and what does he
have to do with this “wonderful” time of the year?
The fact of the matter is that Jesus Christ was probably NOT born on December 25 th. We
see evidence of this in Luke 2:8 as the Bible states that there were shepherds living in the
field with their flocks. In December there also would not likely be much travel, particularly
a seventy mile winter hike for a pregnant Mary as part of a census. Most of the evidence
suggests that Jesus’ birth occurred in late September although we will never know the exact
date of this important event. The fact that many celebrate his birth in December comes from
a decision made by the early Catholic Church to combat a traditional Pagan holiday by
celebrating Christ’s birth instead of the secular “return of the sun.” Armed with this
knowledge we must decide whether or not we want to talk about Jesus in December
knowing that much of what is discussed by various denominations is untrue.
The traditional stance of many Christians has always been to not incorporate Jesus into
anything relating to Christmas. This is certainly acceptable, but I believe we are failing to
capitalize on an opportunity when we brush Christ aside during the holidays. Sadly,
Christmas is the only time of the year that some even think about Jesus. With his birth on
the minds of so many we have an opportunity to not only talk about the truth surrounding
the events of his birth, but also his death, burial, and resurrection which are far important to
the Christian than the fact that he was born.
I want to encourage us all this year to talk about Jesus in December, but I also want to
encourage us to talk about him during the other eleven months of the year! The Gospel
message, Christ and him crucified (I Cor. 2:2), should be shared any time we have the
chance. It is important that we know the truth about Christmas, but it is just as important
that we use it as a chance to reach the lost!

We are so glad that you are here with us today. Our service today will be to
praise and worship God and to encourage and uplift us to face another week in
this world. We will sing, pray, and meet around the Lord’s Table to remember
what our Savior did for us so long ago. We will also give of the many blessings
that God has given us to do the work He has given us to do. We will study from
His Word a lesson that will hopefully be applicable to your daily life. If there is
anything we can do to help you, then please let us know. If you are a visitor,
please fill out a visitor’s card or sign the guestbook in the front of the building so
that we have a record of your visit, and give us an opportunity to meet and
greet you after services.
