Delta Classic Tournament raises scholarship funds for CSES students
HELENA-WEST HELENA, Ark. – The 14th Annual Delta Classic Scholarship Golf
Tournament raised more than $33,000 to fund scholarships for the Crop, Soil, and
Environmental Sciences Department in the University of Arkansas Dale Bumpers College of
Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences.
Robert Bacon, head of the department, said the tournament, which was held July 19 at
Helena Country Club, has raised more than $300,000 for scholarships in 14 years. Since 2000,
123 scholarships have been awarded.
Delta Classic scholarships of $2,000 for the 2013-2014 school year have been awarded
to seven crop science students: Regan Counce of DeWitt, Tra Dickson of Marion, Hunter Harris
of Stuttgart, Taylor Parks of Republic, Mo., James Powell of Fayetteville, and JW Seale of and
Tucker Thompson, both of Marion.
This year, the James L. Barrentine Endowed Scholarships were awarded for the first
time. Three sophomore crop science majors are receiving $2,500 each: Christian Bloodworth
and Michael Fogleman, both of Marion, and Elliott Pruett of Summers. Barrentine, a former
department head, started the tournament in 1999.
Josh Cunningham of Lonoke was the tournament director. An agriculture financial
services officer with AgHeritage Farm Credit Services, he is a member of the CSES Alumni and
Friends organization.
Corporate sponsors for the tournament included Allen Canning Co., Arkansas Farm
Bureau, DuPont Pioneer and Monsanto. Hole sponsors were Ag Hertitage Farm Credit
Services, AGRICEN A Loveland Products Company, Arkansas Rice Council, Armor Seed LLC,
BASF Ag Products, Cache River Valley Seed LLC, Cheminova Inc., Dow AgroSciences,
