Extracurricular Activities at Mother Teresa

Choir

This year the Mother Teresa School Choir has had a huge turnout. Approximately 60 students from grades three to eight are enthusiastic choir members. The choir meets one to two times a week from September to June. This year we are involved in singing for Masses and school liturgies. The choir is currently practicing hard for the upcoming Chapters Family Night on November 13. All students are to be commended for their commitment to choir practices and special events throughout the year.

Girls On the Run

A girls run club for girls in grade 5 that focuses on developing positive self image and a healthy lifestyle while training for a 5K Celebration run/race. The program starts in late

March/early April and runs until June.

Drama Club

Drama Club for grades 6, 7, 8. Students are involved in doing skits, developing skills, writing short scripted plays, and perhaps attending a performance sometime during the year.

Indoor Soccer--Intramurals

There is a big response to indoor soccer intramurals offered to Grades 1-6 children.

This year approximately 260 children signed up and 32 teams were created. They run during the lunch hour (Tuesdays for Primary and Wednesdays and Fridays for Junior.

Art Club- Grades 4-8

This is a once a week club for the students led by the students. Every Thursday during lunch recess, three grade eight students lead junior and intermediate students in Art and Anime lessons where students have the chance to practice their favourite skill and the student leaders offer feedback and support to the students in practicing their art.

Every week is a different artistic highlight and all the work will be collected and displayed during Education Week.

Student Government

The 2012-2013 student government body consists of a group of grade 7 and 8 students who are undertaking leadership roles in the school. The student government plans monthly Spirit days, Fundraising initiatives, assists in school functions, plans activities for the student body, and are the voice of the students. Such activities include

Poinsettia/wreath sales, Easter Lilies sales, helping the primary students with Joy day activities, and much more. They work closely with staff members to ensure a successful and activity-filled year is enjoyed by all.

Peers Running Organized Play Stations

PROPS leaders from gr. 6 & 7 will be running games in the playground for the primary division on Thursdays at lunch beginning in mid November until snowfall. These stations are then run again in the Spring.

Eco Team

Being part of the Eco Team is open to grades 4 - 8, but is usually made up of grade 4 and 5 students. Eco Team meetings usually begin in October, but students (and teachers) may join at any time during the year. Our goal is to raise awareness of environmental issues which affect all of us, to monitor the waste management and energy habits of the school, to report back results and provide useful tips and information to inspire students and teachers to be more responsible stewards of our earth. We try to meet at least once a month, but meet more often during special event times of the year such as; Waste management week (October), World Water Day and

Water Bottle Free Day (March), and Earth Hour, Week, Month (April). Some examples of the activities that we do are; school audits of the recycling bins and use of electricity, announcements, and posters that raise awareness of upcoming events. We have two bulletin boards which also provide information about Environmental issues - one, upstairs outside the computer lab, which provides information about our monthly goals and one, outside the SERT room, which is geared more towards providing general information.

Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books has two teams consisting of approximately nine players. Teams are divided into the Junior Team (Grades 3-5) and Senior Team (Grades 6-8). Students will meet every week to discuss popular books and authors. There will be small quiz rounds to prepare our teams for the final battles. We will be facing school teams from all over

Halton in our battle rounds. Students will be able to showcase their love for reading and hopefully bring home the title of Battle of the Book Champions.

Yearbook Photographers

Our group of Yearbook photographers will alternate with each other on taking quality photos of our students throughout the school year. They will be capturing students in candid moments around the school/classroom as well as during our special events.

Photography Club

Mother Teresa's Yearbook Photographers consists of Grade 7 and 8 students who share a love for photography. They are equipped with our school camera and take candid photos of all of the amazing things taking place here at Mother Teresa. Our student photographers capture moments at Mother Teresa for all to see and experience. Whether you're singing in the choir or on a sports team, make sure to smile because you never know when our photographers will be around to snap your photo!
