Frequently Asked Questions
Answer to Questions About Prerequisites:
ALL of the classes listed below must be completed before you start the graduate program, although you
do not have to complete all of them at the time that you apply for admission to one of our professional
programs. Prerequisite courses do not have to be taken at Ohio University. They may be taken in the classroom
or online at other institutions.
If you take a class at another institution, the content must be comparable to the ones listed below. Description of
courses can be viewed at:

Aural Rehabilitation*
*Special note about Aural Rehabilitation: AuD students take aural rehabilitation as part of their
graduate program. MA students can take it as part of their graduate program although taking it as an
undergraduate course provides you with a greater opportunity to take special topic electives during your
graduate studies.
IN ADDITION, ASHA requires students to have a course in each of the following content areas:
Biological sciences (human or animal sciences)
Physical science (Chemistry or Physics)
Social/behavioral sciences
For Questions About Applying for Admission to the AuD. Program:
How many applicants do you receive for the AuD program? How many slots will there be?
For the audiology program, we may get around 60 applications for approximately 10 slots.
What are your requirements for admission?
A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required to apply to our graduate program. While all applicants meeting that criteria
will be reviewed, a GPA at or above a 3.5 would put you in a more competitive position for admission.
Our “recommended” percentile scores on the GRE score for each section of the GRE are: Verbal 50th
percentile or better, Quantitative 40th percentile or better; Writing 56th percentile or better.
What are your average GPA and GRE scores for admission?
We do not provide this information because each year can vary with the applicant pool. (Please see the
information provided in the above sections on applying to the AuD or MA-SLP programs).
Who can I use as a letter of reference?

How do I know if my GRE scores were received?
Your GRE Score Report is sent directly to Graduate College. The Ohio University Report Code to use is 1593.
You do not need to enter a department code.
AFTER YOU HAVE SUBMITTED YOUR SUPPLEMENTAL APPLICATION you can check to see if your
GRE scores have been received. You must contact the appropriate Graduate College Student Record Manager
based on your last name initial and citizenship status. More information about monitoring your application

we do not check for scores until after the closing date for applications which is January 1, 2016.
Financial Assistance:
The State of Ohio also has a new program called Forever Buckeye that extends the in-state resident tuition
rate to any public or private Ohio high school graduate who leaves the state but returns to enroll in an
undergraduate or graduate program at an Ohio college and also establishes residency in Ohio. The Forever
Buckeyes provision of law removes the 12-month period of establishing domicile in Ohio before becoming
eligible for in-state tuition rates. Go to https://www.ohiohighered.org/forever-buckeyes for full-details. The
OHIO University Forever Buckeye Residency Application can be found at: bit.ly/1pzxaCp
Every student should fill out the FAFSA.
The Division of CSD has financial assistance for students in the form of partial and full GA positions. A partial
GA position comes with a stipend and 50% tuition waiver. A full GA position also comes with a stipend (at a
higher rate compared to the partial) and 100% tuition waiver. These positions are based on students’ previous
academic achievements as well as faculty, staff and clinic needs. There is no guarantee that a student will
receive a GA position. These positions are determined year-by-year. If a student has a GA position his/her first
year, there is no guarantee the student will have a GA position the following year.
Information about tuition rates can be found at:
http://www.ohio.edu/finance/bursar/tuitionfees.cfm
At OHIO University the maximum charge for graduate tuition is 9 hours, so tuition fees remain the sum up to
18 credit hours. See the above tuition rate link for fees beyond 18 credit hours. AuD students complete four
externships. During the first summer externship students register and only pay for 3 credit hours. During the
fourth year, a full time externship, (3 semesters) students register for and only pay for 2credit hours each
semester.
AuD students are considered to be full-time during all externships making them eligible for loans. In addition,
student loans stay in deferral and students are eligible to continue the OU Health Insurance coverage. A tuition
estimator can be found at: http://webapps.ohio.edu/tuitionestimator/
When you complete your FAFSA you should indicate you will be enrolled full time for fall, spring, and
summer.
AuD credit hours during the program study are as follows:
1st year
Fall Semester-15 hours
Spring Semester-14-15 hours
Summer Semester- 14 hours
2nd year
Fall Semester-13 hours
Spring Semester-15 hours
Summer Semester-3 hours
3rd year

Other Graduate Student Opportunities
In addition, we want to let you know about three unique opportunities at Ohio University for CSD students to be
involved in that are directed by faculty within our program:

A Global Health Rehabilitation Services Initiative in Botswana occurs during summer semester. This is
an opportunity for students in the School of Rehabilitation and Communication Sciences to explore
different educational and healthcare settings and systems on a global level. Students will be able to build
cultural competence in rehabilitation and educational settings in Francistown and Gaborone, Botswana.
For more information please contact: Janice Howman, PT, DPT, Med at howman@ohio.edu or Janice
M. Wright, MA CCC-SLP at wrightj2@ohio.edu or visit this website: www.ohio.edu/globalhealth

Students will work in interdisciplinary teams with UKM medical and health science students on
community-based service projects focused on supporting wellness among older adults. Academically
related excursions include visits to Hospice Malaysia, the UKM Medical Centre (including
rehabilitation, geriatric medicine, and palliative care divisions), and the service-learning sites.
Depending on the number of students enrolled and the disciplines represented, projects may be carried
out at Rumah Seri Kenangan Cheras (a continuing care community for low-income older people without
families), the Pensioners Club of Sha Alam, the NACSCOM Daycare Centre, and the Warga Emas
(“Golden Age”) Club of Hulu Langat. For more information please contact: Brooke Hallowell, Ph.D,
CCC-SLP at hallowel@ohio.edu or visit this website: www.ohio.edu/globalhealth

SLP and AuD student also have an opportunity participate in a program that promotes team-based
medical care by taking courses and completing field experiences with students from different health care
disciplines including medicine, nursing, nutrition, physical therapy, child and family studies, and social
work. More information will be available at the Post-Admissions Visit Day.
