Another Beautiful
Homecoming!
A great weekend was
had by all who attended
Homecoming Reunion
Weekend 2010. We had
record attendance and
the weather was
beautiful. If you couldn't be with us, we missed you.
Here is a clip of some messages recorded by
alumni and a photo album. If you want to identify
anyone in the photos, please tell us the number of
the photo and send information to
alumni@susqu.edu.
Homecoming Reunion Weekend 2011 is Sept. 1618. Mark your calendars and reserve your hotel
rooms now-the Hampton Inn and Selinsgrove Inn
are already booked! Shuttles do run from hotels in
Selinsgrove/Shamokin Dam as well as the Best
Western hotel in Lewisburg.
If your graduation year ends in 1 or 6, and you
would like to volunteer to help plan your reunion,
please contact Becky Deitrick.
Thank You, Reunion Classes
Thank you to all of the 2010 reunion classes for
making Homecoming Reunion Weekend 2010 one
of the most successful in Susquehanna's history. It
was an incredible weekend. Not only were we able
to walk down memory lane, but we were reminded
of how much Susquehanna University has touched
our lives and made us the people we are today.
Congratulations to all of the reunion classes! Your
gifts for SU totaled more than $1.9 million. A
special thank you to the Class of 1975 for raising
the most-more than $718,000!
Every gift will make a difference in a student's life.
Thank you!
Alumni Connections Help Students
Networking has long been a benefit for
Susquehanna alumni, and we've heard many
stories of helpful connections made among alumni.
But networking can also be useful to current
students. Kati Frantz '11 has learned this firsthand
and developed a mentor relationship with
Jameson Troutman '02.
The two first connected
before Frantz went to study
abroad in London last
spring. Troutman's
connections have helped
her meet people with
valuable experience while
abroad and at Chase
headquarters last summer.
Frantz has met his
colleagues and others, and
learned a great deal about
event planning, her chosen
career path.
"He is always thinking of me and how he can help,"
she says. "He provides me with ongoing guidance
and has revised my resume about five times."
You can develop a similar relationship with a
Susquehanna student. Go to the "Get Involved"
section of SU Bridge and look for information on
becoming a mentor and providing
internship/employment advice.
Candlelight Service to be Shared
Susquehanna University's annual Christmas
Candlelight Service will be held Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m.
in Weber Chapel Auditorium. The Christmas
Candlelight Service is one of Susquehanna's most
cherished traditions, with more than 1,600
members of Susquehanna University and
surrounding communities gathering in the chapel.
Outstanding
Alumni Honored
The 2010 Susquehanna
Alumni Award recipients
were honored at a
banquet during
Homecoming Reunion Weekend. Pictured are
Jameson Troutman, Marie Burns, Sam Clapper,
Hugo Warns, Jim Summers, Jay Lemons and
Stephen Wallace.
Marie E. Burns '92 and Hugo J. Warns III '90
received the Achievement Award, given to alumni
who have achieved distinction in their fields as
recognized by peers in their professional
communities. Burns is professor of ophthalmology
and director of the Center for Visual Sciences at
the University of California, Davis. Warns is senior
vice president and director of equity research at
Stifel Nicolaus.
Stephen Wallace '81 earned the Leadership
Award, which is given to alumni who have shown
outstanding leadership in their careers or
communities. Since graduating from Susquehanna,
Wallace has become a leader in the corporate
world, and in public policy and service arenas. He
has served as a board member, chairman and
CEO of Students Against Destructive Decisions.
James Summers '64 received the Service Award,
and Sam Clapper '68 was recognized for Service
to Susquehanna. These awards are given to
alumni who have demonstrated exceptional
involvement in their communities or in the
Susquehanna University community. Summers led
the university through the successful Changing
Lives, Building Futures campaign as its chair.
Clapper's SU involvement includes stints as alumni
board president from 2001 to 2003 and as a
member of Susquehanna's Board of Trustees from
1976 to 1982.
Jameson Troutman '02 was named Outstanding
Recent Alumnus as a graduate of the past decade
who exemplifies Susquehanna's ideals of
achievement, leadership and service in his life and
work. He is a growth strategy manager involved in
new product development and strategy for the
Chase Card Services division of JPMorgan Chase
and is a member of the Sigmund Weis School of
Business advisory board.
The service includes
candle lighting and carols,
as well as traditional
readings, songs and
prayers in celebration of
the season. The Rev.
Mark Wm. Radecke,
university chaplain, presides and preaches. The
Rev. Ted Keating, pastor of St. Pius X Church in
Selinsgrove and spiritual adviser to Susquehanna's
Catholic community, serves as assisting minister.
All members of the Susquehanna community are
welcome to attend the Candlelight Service. If you
can't be there in person, check your local PBS
station, as previous services often are rebroadcast
during the holidays. Those in the WVIA viewing
area can see it Dec. 24 at 7 a.m., as well as the
2004 Christmas Masterworks concert on Dec. 25 at
2 p.m.
