________________________________________________________________________
Wunan is an Aboriginal development organisation in the East Kimberley, with a clear purpose and
strategy to drive long-term socio-economic change for Aboriginal people by providing real
opportunities, investing in people’s abilities, and by encouraging and rewarding aspiration and selfresponsibility. To find out more about Wunan and the programs we deliver, please visit
www.wunan.org.au.
BOARD VACANCIES
Wunan’s ability to empower Aboriginal people and their families to create independent lives will be
stronger if we have a strong Board. Potential leaders come in many forms including young people,
women, Traditional Owners, town based and remote based. A cross section of experiences and
backgrounds will help Wunan to make the right decisions for our region.
A. Essential Qualities

Supporting Wunan’s purpose: ability to focus on outcomes for the region and its people,
rather than local politics.

Future Leadership: managing people and achieving change.

Integrity: fulfilling a director’s duties and responsibilities, putting the organisation’s
interested before personal interests, acting ethically.

Interpersonal skills: must work well in a group, listen well, and be tactful but able to
communicate their point of view frankly.

Curiosity and courage: must have the curiosity to ask questions and the courage to persist
in asking or to challenge management and fellow board members where necessary.

Broad acceptance and credibility in the community.

Prepared to contribute in meetings and represent the best interests of the community in
the context of the Wunan’s charter.

Provide information back to the community.

Strong belief and commitment to the objectives of Wunan particularly for the benefit of
Aboriginal economic development, from both a family and community context.
B. What is involved in being on the Wunan Board?
Roles and Responsibilities
Board Members are expected to be fully up to date on what the organisation is doing. This
includes understanding the impact on the business of any new proposals and seeking additional
advice where it is needed. Board members would ideally become involved in discussions at the
meeting to develop an understanding of the matters placed before the meeting, to ensure that
they can make informed decisions.
Opportunities
As a part of the Wunan Board you will be exposed to a variety of opportunities including:

Opportunities to take part in professional development activities

Opportunities to contribute to positive outcomes for Aboriginal people in the East Kimberley
region

Opportunities to network with other leaders in the region and professional representatives
