BOARD VACANCIES Wunan’s ability to empower Aboriginal people and their families to create independent lives will be stronger if we have a strong Board. Potential leaders come in many forms including young people, women, Traditional Owners, town based and remote based. A cross section of experiences and backgrounds will help Wunan to make the right decisions for our region. A. Essential Qualities Supporting Wunan’s purpose: ability to focus on outcomes for the region and its people, rather than local politics. Future Leadership: managing people and achieving change. Integrity: fulfilling a director’s duties and responsibilities, putting the organisation’s interested before personal interests, acting ethically. Interpersonal skills: must work well in a group, listen well, and be tactful but able to communicate their point of view frankly. Curiosity and courage: must have the curiosity to ask questions and the courage to persist in asking or to challenge management and fellow board members where necessary. Broad acceptance and credibility in the community. Prepared to contribute in meetings and represent the best interests of the community in the context of the Wunan’s charter. Provide information back to the community. Strong belief and commitment to the objectives of Wunan particularly for the benefit of Aboriginal economic development, from both a family and community context. B. What is involved in being on the Wunan Board? Roles and Responsibilities Board Members are expected to be fully up to date on what the organisation is doing. This includes understanding the impact on the business of any new proposals and seeking additional advice where it is needed. Board members would ideally become involved in discussions at the meeting to develop an understanding of the matters placed before the meeting, to ensure that they can make informed decisions. A Board member will: Attend four (4) meetings per year, each meeting one half to a full day. Be appointed for a three (3) year period. Be reimbursed for reasonable expenses. Be provided with materials and Board Papers prior to the meeting. Meeting Process Board meetings generally deal with the following items of business: Financial position of Wunan Foundation, investments and current projects. Legal requirements of running the organisation including corporate administration and planning. Review each of the organisation’s projects performance and issues. Development of new commercial projects. There will be an Induction session before the first meeting and specific training as required to assist members with their understanding of the business. A strong Board is critical to the ongoing success of Wunan.
