SCHOOL STRATEGIC PLANNING
MID-YEAR REPORT: 2010-2011
SCHOOL: ___Lewis Elementary__________________________
AREA______5______
Evidence of Change—Mid Year
In your school strategic plan, you identified the means to monitor the implementation of strategies. List below your monitoring plan and any evidence you have
of change in your building for each student achievement and school performance goal. Evidence should be based on the monitoring plan specified in your plan.
Student Achievement Goal 1: Students will demonstrate continuous improvement on stated indicators and performance assessments. Students will
meet or exceed expectations on the Reading CRCT.
Monitoring Plan
Evidence of Change
Daily Guided reading
Individual reading
conferences
Writer’s Workshop
Writing Conferences
Running Records
Daily Guided Reading: Some class key observations were completed in guided reading with written
feedback given. Learning walks are also being completed in this area in addition to classroom teacher
observations. All grade levels reported that daily guided reading is happening and producing positive gains
as assessed by running records and individual student data cards. Individual Reading Conferences are not
formally happening on a daily basis, however, students are getting oral feedback on reading performance on
a regular basis. 5th grade students receive written teacher feedback on a regular basis in their literature logs.
Writer’s Workshop: Writer’s work shop is evident in teacher lesson plans, however, some are struggling
with the conferencing component of writer’s workshop. Future staff development will focus on strategies
for improving this element. Writing conferences are occurring in several different formats. Kindergarten
uses a daily journal with “sticky” note feedback for students. The writing conference notebook has been
used by some, but all teachers have used the individual student data sheets to monitor student growth and
progress. The expectation for running records was that each teacher would complete a monthly Running
Record on each student and use this data to adjust guided reading groups. Any student below grade level
should have a running record completed more than once a month and that data should be used to adjust
instruction and grouping. Teachers are monitoring this progress with individual data sheets and data cards.
Evidence of change includes benchmark scores Pre/post as well as individual progress gains shown in the
data room via student data cards. Our mid-year Language Arts Checkpoint data shows that grade level
averages range from 64% to 73% when at that time the expectation was that students should know 50% of
the items on the test.

Student Achievement Goal 2: Students will meet or exceed expectations on the Math CRCT.
Monitoring Plan
Guided Math
Daily math RAP
Research based strategies
Evidence of Change
Guided math instruction is evident in teacher lesson plans. All classes are using guided math at least once
per week. Teachers have found that student engagement and attention to practicing skills have increased
due to this format of instruction. Some teacher observations and classroom walk-throughs have been
during the time that teachers are giving instruction in the guided math format. Daily math RAP is evident in
lesson plans and classroom walk-throughs. Teachers are also incorporating the promethean board for this
component of math instruction. There is 100% participation among teachers on a daily basis.
Research based strategies: Implementation of research based strategies like Model Drawing and Hands on
Equations is sporadic across the building. Some teachers are incorporating this into guided math instruction.
Teacher attended an area sponsored professional in-service using these research based strategies to help
them implement. Release time was also given for teachers to collaboratively plan instruction that would
incorporate guided math and research based strategies. Evidence of change has been seen in lesson plans,
teacher observations and classroom walk throughs. Individual data sheets are monitoring student gains
with a pre and post test score. Our mid-year math checkpoint results are not as strong in the area of math
as they are in language arts, however, 3 grade levels are above the district average.
-2-
School Performance Goal: Teachers will work collaboratively in data teams and grade level teams to plan purposeful, data-driven lessons.
Monitoring Plan
Evidence of Change
Weekly team collaboration
Data Team recording form
Assess students each 9
weeks using grade level
teacher- made
assessments and grade
level benchmarks
Weekly team collaboration meeting minutes are submitted to administration upon completion of the
meeting. This meeting has a template that includes: curriculum updates, student successes and
celebrations, up-coming assessments and data accountability check and struggles/concerns that the team
needs assistance with. Data Team recording form is not as necessary this year due to the individual data
record sheets and the data cards that monitor student progress. They have not been used. Student
assessments have been consistently the county grade level benchmarks in the area of math and language
arts. Teachers have not created an additional 9 week school generated benchmark. The monthly data team
analyzes and discusses the results of the benchmark.
Evidence of change has been seen in the keeping of data for individual students. Teachers are using the
information they have on students to create small group lessons for students at all levels of instruction.
They have made the shift from just collecting data to using data.
Mid-Year Adjustment
Based on the evidence of change occurring in your building, list any mid-year adjustments that the school will make for second semester.
Area of Change (Student
Achievement or School
Performance)
Changes that will be made
Student Achievement in math
Teachers will be required in the second semester to give the end of 9 weeks benchmark with
their Irespond technology so that the data can accessed quickly and specific standards
addressed.
Teacher will meet for their weekly collaborative meeting in the data room. This will help
focus to remain on data and instruction.
Monthly Tuesday team collaboration afternoons will be spent on unpacking the math
standards for the upcoming month. This will include knowing the depth of knowledge for the
standards, assessments and strategies for teaching to mastery level.
Kindergarten teachers will submit their GKIDS checklist as representative data for data team
meetings.
