LOAD SPRINGER 2/10/11spg, rev. 10/19/15 ►We may or may not purchase Springer access each year. Before loading records for next year check with Aaron or Helen. Update: We’ve renewed Springer for 2015 through 2019. Info about MARC records generally: http://www.springer.com/gp/librarians/marc Springer Ebook Marc Records Implementation Guide: http://static.springer.com/sgw/documents/1395406/application/pdf/SpringerMARCRecordImplementationGuide.pdf Sign up for Catalog Update Newsletter: http://www.springer.com/gp/librarians/marc/catalog-update-newsletter/7694 Retrieve MARC records: http://www.springer.com/gp/librarians/marc/marc-records-tool NEW RECORDS Check for new files on a monthly basis, maybe two weeks into the next month. There won’t be records for every month. Go to http://www.springer.com/gp/librarians/marc/marc-records-tool Choose English/International and all the Copyright years except for Book Archive. Under Download options make sure it says MARC21 (i.e. UTF-8) and Grouping None (puts all records into one .mrc file). For Record date, choose the desired starting month. The month represents records available for that entire month, so you would download December records in January. Load Springer -- p. 2 Load Springer -- p. 3 Once you enter a starting from date it shows the number of matching records. Take note of this number to check against what you actually download. If there are no new/updated records the “Download” button will be grayed out and it will say there are no matching records. Click Download. Click to unzip the .mrc file. By default the .mrc file has the download date + a unique file number. Rename it with the year and the month(s) the file covers, e.g. Springer_MARC_2012-12.mrc and save to the folder. Records are UTF-8. Delete all 003’s. Add field: Load Springer -- p. 4 003 SpringerEB 001’s are the e-ISBN. Use Find and Replace to change them to be more distinctive by adding “spr” at the beginning: Find: Replace: =001 978 =001 spr978 Records have 050’s but many are not LC call numbers. Leave the 050’s there. Because there are no 090’s the records will load without call numbers. 3XX. As of 9/3/13 records have some RDA fields that are fine as is: 336 337 338 347 \\$atext$btxt$2rdacontent \\$acomputer$bc$2rdamedia \\$aonline resource$bcr$2rdacarrier \\$atext file$bPDF$2rda 6XX. Springer records have a lot of non-LC 650’s. To get rid of any and all non-LC 6XX’s: Go to Tools--Add/Delete Field and enter data as follows: Field: 6xx Field data: ^=6.{5}[^0] Check Use Regular Expression Click Delete Field Add 830 _0 Springer eBooks. It does not seem worth checking the retractions files. If you want to, under Download options choose “Deleted MARC records” and set options as for new records. ABOUT RECORDS FROM OCLC Springer offers OCLC records at no additional charge. It works like EBSCO. We’ve not pursued this as Springer has continuously improved its records, and involving ourselves with OCLC has its complications. But it’s an option for the future.
