Auditors and Trustees Report – (Bernie Kuta)
No report.
Ceremonials: (Keith Lowry) The next First Degree is planned for Thursday, 1 October 2015 at 6:30PM.
Lecturers Report (Good of the Order) – (Christopher Harden):
Christopher continued his discussions on evangelization; specifically, being a man and what we share with our families and
communities. He pointed out the following in regards to conversion of families to Catholicism: children that convert – 5% of
their families then convert; wives that convert – 23% of their families then convert; and fathers that convert – 93-98% of their
families then convert. As Catholic men, we need to recognize the significant impact we provide to our families through our
actions. Christopher also presented some very good books on this same subject.
Boys to Men – The Transforming Power of Virtue by Tim Gray and Curtis Martin
Strong Fathers Strong Daughters – 10 Secrets Every Father Should Know by Meg Meeker, M.D.
Boys Should Be Boys – 7 Secrets to Raising Healthy Sons by Meg Meeker, M.D.
Ad Hoc Committee:
The KoC retreat held at El Tesoro de Las Angeles, from 28-30 August, was a great success. Twenty men plus Father Frank
attended. Father Frank is looking forward to holding another similar retreat. All those that attended provided positive feedback
on their experiences. The funds collected for this event not only covered all expenses, there were actually excess funds. It was
proposed that these funds go towards the chili cook off. This was motioned, seconded, discussed, and passed unanimously .
Committee Reports
Committee Chair – Tim Mosholder
Membership: As mentioned under Notices of Applications, we have three new membership applications with a 1 st degree
planned at St Mark on Thursday 1 October 2015 starting at 6:30PM. We also have a 2 nd/3rd Degree planned at St Mark on
Saturday, 7 November 2015. Also, there is a 2nd/3rd Degree hosted by Council 6905 in Evergreen on Saturday, 19 September
2015. Finally, on Saturday 3 October 2015, Council 539 is holding a 4th Degree Exemplification in downtown Denver.
Keith Lowry: As mentioned under Notices of Applications, Keith read five applications; two for transfer and three for new
membership. All were voted into KoC 1498.
Church – (John Park-) (absent): Nothing to report.
Youth – (Steve Myer): The soccer shootout is scheduled on Sunday, 27 September 2015, from 12:00AM to 2:00PM at
Redstone Park. This shootout is for kids, ages 10-14. More information on this event will be sent out via email. It will also be
posted in the St Mark bulletin.
Family: (Bernie Kuta) (absent):
Brother Tim Mosholder presented in Bernie’s absence. Bernie is in need of several men to help with the First Saturday Supper
Beer & Brats family activity on Saturday, 5 September 2015, starting immediately after the 4:00PM mass. The Cuisine for the
Spirit meals group is joining us as part of their annual kickoff dinner. We will need extra chairs and tables and a carport tent
set up to accommodate the larger group. Please plan to help beginning at 2:30 PM until dusk with set-up, cooking, serving, and
clean-up. Bernie would appreciate your RSVP as a volunteer so he knows how many to count on for help.
The second annual chili cook-off is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 10 October 2015 after the 4:00PM mass. This will be
our last outdoor “First Saturday Dinner”. Everyone is welcome to bring their favorite chili (six quarts); the entry fee is $30.
Electrical power will be provided. There will also be games for kids. Proceed from this event will support our seminarians.
Bernie is looking to hold a family activity in late September 2015; possibly the preparation of the St Mark grounds for winter.
More info to come.
A discussion took place on the ongoing effort to move KoC 1498 items out of the St Mark kitchen and pantry area. As part of
this effort, there is a need to replace the dilapidated exterior shed (10’x10’) with a larger shed or sheds. Brother Carlo
explained that, if you install or construct a shed larger than 10’x12’, you not only require a permit ($85), but also require a site
plan, which can take months to complete and cost up to $5,000. Brother Tim explained that he had a company through his
employer that would provide large sheds (10’x16’) at a 40% discount. The savings on this shed may not offset the permit and
site planning costs. The procurement of sheds requires further study; this issue was tabled for further research and cost
comparisons.
Community: Mark Smith: As Mark had to depart the meeting, Brother Tim Mosholder briefed on the Tootsie Roll Campaign
for people with Intellectual Disabilities. The first events are planned the weekends of 9-10 and 23-24 October 2015. Mark
needs plenty of volunteers help to pass out nine cases of Tootsie Rolls.
Standing Committee/The Formal: John Park is leading next year’s formal (Brother Keith Lowry gave the report)
The planning committee consists of: the Staley’s, Cahill’s, Lowry’s, Hardin’s and Park families. The Marriot Hotel in the
Denver Tech Center is being considered to host the Gala as well as Columbine Country Club (as it is now available again).
There will be a planning committee “kickoff” meeting at the Park’s home on Saturday, 19 September 2015 at 7:30 pm. The
committee is looking for ideas for auction items; specifically, live auction items. The planning committee is still developing the
theme. .
Camping Trip: (Keith Lowry) A total of 21 families attended the 23-26 July 2015 annual camping trip; this year at Wolford
Reservoir. The revenues from the camping trip were $2,980 and the expenses $3,412. As a result, we may need to increase the
cost of next year’s camping trip by approximately $25/family. A discussion took place on the location for next years’ camping
trip. Some felt that Wolford Reservoir offered additional opportunities for families as you can swim and boat on the lake and it
offers more of a community atmosphere. It was also pointed out that there is a water safety concern at the Wolford Reservoir
due to the steep drop-off along the banks. A vote was taken, and Wolford Reservoir was chosen for next years’ camping trip
location.
Peach Sales: The Council sold 232 of 240 cases of peaches with $8,000 in total sales and a net of $3,200. Brother John
Whattam thanked all for their assistance taking orders and unloading the peaches.
Council Director: (Eric Obergfell): Brother Eric thanked all those who helped at the August 2015 pancake breakfast. He also
asked, at future breakfasts, for additional volunteers to help at the end of the shift for cleanup. The next pancake breakfast is
scheduled for 20 September 2015 after the 8:00AM mass.
Football season has started! Those interested in taking part in Football Frenzy should contact Brother Rusty Hogan. The cost
is $10.
Pro-life: (Chet Elder):
There will be a Respect for Life Dinner on Monday, 26 October 2015. Knights will be
purchasing a table, so please contact Brother Chet if you are interested in attending. An email with further details will be
forthcoming.
Unfinished Business:
The resurfacing of the lower level floors (quote of $1,225) was tabled due to other upcoming expenses.
NEW BUSINESS:
Deacon Ed and Brother Dave Barnett briefed on the Disabled and Homeless Veterans. A donation was requested in the
amount of $1,000 to assist the Military Outreach Ministry (MOM), an organization under the Diocese of Colorado Springs.
The donation was motioned, seconded, there was no discussion, and a vote will take place at the October 2015 Council
meeting.
Brother Tim Moshholder presented on behalf of Brother Bernie Kuta. Robert Seydel was recently accepted into the
Deaconate Program; a five-year program. This program requires the purchase of books, travel, etc. As such, a motion was
made to provide Brother Robert a $500 gift to help offset some of these expenses. This was seconded and discussion then took
place; specifically, that the KoC 1498 set a precedent as we provided a similar gift to Deacon Garrett when he started the same
program. The motion carried and Brother Robert thanked everyone for the thoughtful gift.
Brothers Greg Staley and Dr. Aaron Knox: Both Brother Aaron and Greg gave testimonials on juvenile diabetes and the
effects on their families due to the fact that their children (Ellie and Cameron) have this type 1 disease. As such, they made a
motion for the KoC 1498 to give $500 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) One Walk. JDRF is a charitable
501 organization dedicated to funding type 1 diabetes research. A motion was made to give $250 to Brother Staley’s team and
$250 to Brother Aaron’s team, which are taking part in the JDRF One Walk. A motion was made, seconded, and then
discussion took place. It was pointed out that JDRF completes stem cell research, which is against the teachings and doctrine of
the Catholic Church. Conversely, people and organization donating funds to JDRF can opt out from their funds going towards
this specific purpose. The funds were approved with this caveat.
John Whattam: Brother John said that we have been partnering with the Rocky Mountain Peach Company for ten years.
During this time, the owners John and Rebecca Cox have kept their prices reasonable; some years, not even increasing their
price. As such, he made a motion that we present them with a plaque and provide them comp tickets to the annual gala. This
was seconded, discussed and approved.
4th Degree Report: (Dave Barnett): Faithful Navigator Dave asked that all 4th degree knights remember to attend the
next meeting on the 4th Thursday of the month. A Rosary will be prayed before every meeting in the future.
