DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Staff Nurse
Nursing Care in Medical – Surgical Ward & I.C.U.



































Receiving the patient to the unit.
Providing safe environment.
Admission of patient according to hospital policies.
Assessment of the patient.
History taking.
Physical Examination, Checking vital signs.
Investigation
Identification.
Prepare shorts and long term goals.
Provide basis care to the patient meeting personal hygiene, nutritional needs elimination
needs
Maintain accurate intake and output chart.
Impart health education to the patient and relatives.
Maintain cleanliness and aseptic techniques during care.
Maintain accurate and up – to – date record and report.

Procedures related to personal hygiene like sponge bath, Mouth care, Nail care, Back care,
Eye care etc..
Procedures like catheterization, suture removal, Collection of samples (Blood, Urine),
stomach wash, Enema etc.
Administering the medication as per doctor order and observe for side effect.
Maintain proper documentation.
Prepare the patient for discharge and home care.
Performing various type of dressing sutures and clip removal.
Pre and post operative care of patient with all cardiac procedure.
Take 12 lead ECG.
Assist the doctor in performing diagnostic and the therapeutic procedure like Endo Tracheal
intubations, Lumbar Puncture Pleural tapping, dressing, bone marrow aspiration, intra
coastal tube insertion and drainage urinary catheterization.
Anticipation and prevention of complication, emergency and resuscitation treatment,
Oxygen therapy, General nursing care, start and maintain IV infusion.
Prepare the patient for procedures like X-rays, CT scan, ECG, IVP, barium meal,
Sonography as ordered.
Check narcotic drugs at each shift – duty and record in the register, setting up the Crash Cart
with all emergency drugs.
Maintain clean and safe equipment and maintain patient’s record.
Send a diet chart to the dietician according to the doctor’s order




Supervisors and orientation of students and trainees participated in staff training programs.
Transfer and discharge of the patients.
Keep the dignity and status of the profession reports verbally by going.
Bed to bed writing the progress of the patient at each shift charge.
