How To Register for Early Start Courses Please follow the steps below in order to select and officially register in each Early Start course that you are required to take. 1. Visit www.sfsu.edu and click on the “Login” link at the very top of the website. 2. Click on the “SF State Gateway” link and log in using your SF State ID number and password. 3. Enter your Student Center by clicking on the “Fall 2014 Student Center” link. The Student Center is where students can find out their admission status, enroll in courses for the semester, and view their academic history. 4. Enter the Early Start Registration Portal through clicking on the “Enroll in Early Start” link that is located at the top of the page underneath the “Academics” section of your Student Center. Please ensure that you click on the appropriate “Enroll in Early Start” link. 5. Search for Early Start courses by clicking on the green “Search” link near the middle of your screen. Through clicking on this link, a search engine will appear that will allow you to look at all available Early Start courses. 6. Find your Early Start Courses through clicking on the “Course Subject” dropdown menu. Select whether you are searching for “Early Start English” or “Early Start Math”. If you are required to enroll in both Early Start English and Early Start Math, you can go back and repeat the process to add your remaining required Early Start Course. After selecting the Early Start course(s) that you are required to enroll in, click on the green “Search” button. 7. Review your options for your required Early Start course. Take a look at the “Room” description to check whether the course is online or on campus. Take a look at “Meeting Dates” for the specific dates of when the course begins and ends, and the days and times that each course takes place. 8. Students that score a 146 or below on the EPT exam are required to enroll in ESE 99 (Early Start English), which is designed to serve as an introduction to college reading and writing. Students have the option of selecting to enroll in the online or on-campus option of ESE 99. The on-campus option of ESE 99 is a 4-day course that meets for three hours Monday through Thursday. The online option of ESE 99 is also a 4-day course, but will be completed entirely online. 9. Students that score between a 42 – 48 on their ELM exam are required to enroll in either ESM 70 or ESM 40. ESM 70 is a 3 unit on-campus course that meets from June 22 – August 14. Students that successfully complete ESM 70 will complete their Early Start requirements AND move up”/”bump up” to GE Quantitative Reasoning. This means that students that successfully complete ESM 70 will complete their remedial math requirements AND are eligible to enroll in college-level math for Fall 2015. ESM 40 is a 1 unit online course that takes place from July 6 – July 31. Students that successfully complete ESM 40 will complete their Early Start Math requirement, but will NOT “move up”/”bump up” to General Education Quantitative Reasoning. This means that students will still be required to enroll in one semester of remedial math (Math 70) for Fall 2015. 10. Students that score a 40 or below on their ELM exam are required to enroll in either ESM 60 or ESM 40. ESM 60 is a 3 unit on-campus course that meets from June 22 – August 14. Students that successfully complete ESM 60 will complete their Early Start requirements AND move up”/”bump up” to the final semester of remedial math. This means that students that successfully complete ESM 60 will complete their remedial math requirement and are eligible to enroll in Math 70 for Fall 2015. ESM 40 is a 1 unit online course that takes place from July 6 – July 31. Students that successfully complete ESM 40 will complete their Early Start Math requirement, but will NOT “move up”/”bump up” to the final level of remedial math. This means that students will still be required to complete TWO semesters of remedial math during their first year at San Francisco State University. Students that complete ESM 40 will then enroll in Math 60 for Fall 2015. 11. Once you find an Early Start Course that matches your availability, click on the green “Select Class” link. 12. Carefully review the details of your selected Early Start Course and review the details listed under the “Enrollment Information” to ensure that there are no any restrictions associated with enrolling in the course. Confirm your request to enroll in the course by clicking on the green “Next” link. 13. Your selected Early Start course(s) should now have been added into your course “Shopping Cart”. In order to proceed to the next step of officially enrolling in the course, you must click on the green “Proceed to Step 2 of 3” link. 14. To officially complete enrollment in your Early Start course, click on the green “Finish Enrolling” link. 15. Once you have clicked on the “Finish Enrolling” link, a message will pop up indicating if you have received an Early Start fee waiver. If you do not qualify for a fee waiver, please review the video tutorial on how to make your Early Start payment. College algebra ( Normendale community college
