Its role is to expand the curriculum beyond classical continuum mechanics by assimilating advances in the sciences into new approaches and tools. Thus, ESM strives to be an internationally recognized focal program for the learning and discovery of multiscale interdisciplinary systems. The Vision 2025 effort was initiated due to the 2010 Graduate Program Review Committee’s challenge for the ESM Faculty to “reach a strong consensus on the identity and mission” of the department. This was discussed at an annual ESM Advisory Committee Meeting and a suggestion was made to recruit a small but distinguished team of ESM alumni to assist with this task. Engineering Fee: State-of-the-Art Motion Tracking for Biomechanics In the top right image, students and instructor prepare a volunteer for testing. At lower right, the system is used to track the motion of a volunteer for a class assignment. Students in ESM 4204 Musculoskeletal Biomechanics discuss the capabilities of a new stateof-the-art motion tracking system. Engineering Fee: A Multi-camera High-speed Video System for Biomechanics Education Core system: Two Photron APX-RS high speed video cameras, lenses and tripods. Compatible for expansion with other ESM Photron cameras Capabilities: Synchronized video recording up to 250,000 frames per second Implementation: Biomotion: Life in Moving Fluids (Spring 2010, 2011) Senior Design (2010-2011; Ralph Navarette, Oliver Raj, Matt Paluzcek) Graduate Student Research (Sarah Dellinger, Myles Simon) Testing the setup with a human jump Impact on 50+ undergraduate and graduate Recording the complex wingbeat students patterns of a locust Gifts • • • • • • Kevin Granata Faculty Fellowship Liviu Librescu Faculty Prize Liviu Librescu Graduate Scholarship(s) Hassan Aref Memorial Endowment Bechtel Travel Fellowship(s) Alfriend Travel Fellowship(s) Shout outs About half of the ESM Faculty has served on search committees Shout out to hiring Army YI IGERT CAREER CAREER NSF NSF EFRI Co-PI Ten new hires since 2006: • Fluid dynamics, chaos • Dynamical systems • Soft matter • Organismal biomechanics • Nanoscience • Bioinspiration CAREER ONR One additional hire in 2013 Top 20 Virginia Tech Teachers COE Teaching Excellence Out of roughly 340 instructors Recent COE Faculty Fellows To Students (& Mentors) College of Engineering Outstanding Doctoral Student Virginia Tech Graduate Man of the Year Virginia Tech Honorable Mention Outstanding Dissertation Science & Engineering Jefferson Goblet Award for best student paper at 52nd AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC SSDM Conference Undergraduate Research Communication in Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulation, 2012 j.esm.vt.edu Shout Out to Team Effort An improved web presence An exemplary departmental newsletter An international interdisciplinary presence Mechanics in Extreme Environments AmeriMech 2013?
