 Reading Homework: This week we will be checking out a new book
for December. Remember to bring your book to class on Wednesday
for silent reading. Fill out the book choice form on the back of this
page by Friday.
 Vocabulary Work: Write sentences for the five new vocabulary words
in this packet and learn them for a quiz on Friday.
 Grammar Practice: Subject and Predicate. Every sentence has two
basic parts: the subject and the predicate. The subject tells whom or
what the sentence is about (and always includes a key noun or
pronoun, the “simple subject”). The predicate tells something about
the subject (and always includes a verb).
This week in class:
 Monday: Share penpal letters and turn them in. Media Center for
December book: LT: I can write a letter to a classmate about a book I
read.
 Tuesday: Chapter 7. New Vocab List. LT: I can use context clues to
learn new vocabulary.
 Wednesday: Silent Reading. Grammar: Subjects and Predicates. LT:
I can identify the subject and the predicate, and the simple subject
and the verb, of a sentence.
 Thursday: Chapter 8. Chapter Map. LT: I can summarize a chapter
by picking out important events and telling them in order.
 Friday: Quiz. Pages of this packet due.
Due on Friday: Book Choice Form, Grammar practice page, Vocabulary
sentences. (Be ready for a quiz on this week’s work.)

independent reading, at home and at school. (You are expected to read
five nights a week, 30 minutes a night at home.) You may get this book
from home, from the public library, from a bookstore, or from our media
center when we go there on Wednesday. Once you have found the book,

Simple Subject and Verb. The key word in the subject of the sentence is called the
“simple subject.” The key word in the predicate is the verb of the sentence. In the
examples below the simple subject is underlined once and the verb twice.
