Identify the various breeds of beef cattle of commercial importance based on origin and breed characteristics. Determine the function of beef animals and the production systems in which they are produced. Select breeding animals by interpreting performance data. Identify the parts of the beef animal and use in phenotypic evaluation. Essential Question/ Key Question What are the different breeds of beef cattle? What are the different breeds of beef cattle? What type of production systems exist in the beef cattle industry? What is an EPD and how can it be used? What are the parts of a beef animal (cow and bull)? Lesson Opener Have students call out every breed they can think of. What breed are you most interested in? Why are statistics in sports important? You have $3000 to spend on a new bull for your herd. You know his EPDs but what else do you need to know? Are his physical traits going to allow him to breed successfully? Procedures/Strategies Use Powerpoint to show picture examples of each major beef breed. Discuss where the breed came from and some of its best traits. Have students pick 1 breed they are most interested in and have them create a collage describing that breed. Collage must include: Breed name, country of origin, color, breed association headquarters, distinguishing traits. There is an old saying that the best way to get the fastest horse is to breed the fastest stallion to the fastest mare. What does this mean? How does it apply to cattle? Discuss and describe attributes of the following beef cattle production systems: Cow-calf, Purebred breeder, Stocker, Finisher. Introduce students to EPDs and their use in the beef cattle industry. What is an EPD, how is it used? Are they accurate? Why is this information important? Demonstrate to students the parts of a beef animal. Describe why certain parts of the cow are extremely important to know when evaluating (health, stamina, ability to mount, ability to breed, etc) Lesson Summary Review of top 10 beef breeds. Review collages Recap the highlights of the 4 types of beef cattle production systems. Recap the most useful EPDs and their importance in different livestock production systems. Review beef animals parts. Assessment/ Evaluation Show pictures of each breed and ask class to call out the correct breed. Students to complete Beef Breed Matching Worksheet. Assessment of collages Have students get in groups and evaluate the pros and cons of 1 type of production system. Submit via Socrative. Have students go to: http://www.geauga4h.org/beef/beef_body.htm And practice naming the body parts until they receive a score of 85% (show teacher once they have received this score) Materials Needed iPad iPad iPad Give students EPDs of 4 bulls and have them choose the best one for a cow-calf operation in which they are breeding heifers. Submit using Socrative. iPad 5-10 min. Time 40 min Time 5 min Time iPad RHS Weekly Lesson Plan Template: Bennett Jacobs –Animal Production and Management
