Upper Elementary – 3 Learning Activities: (Day 3) Make a Current (10-15 Minutes) What You Need: Warm Water, Aquarium, 2 Beakers, 2 Cups of Salt, Blue Food Coloring, Computer Say: What did God create on the third day? (Pause for Response) Plants! What else? (Pause for Response) Oh, see we almost miss this remarkable part of the text in Genesis where God actually makes a distinction between the land and oceans. God already separated the waters from the heavens, but now God is defining the oceans that make up our world. What is cool about the ocean? (Pause for Response) I think the currents are really cool. Let’s make one! Example: Look here - http://pinterest.com/pin/314266880218116354/ Do: Have the science experiment materials set up and walk the children through the experiment along with the video. Say: Who made salt? (Pause for Response) Salt makes ocean currents possible. Currents move heat, water, and nutrients around the ocean. Without them, there would not be life in the ocean. The story of creation shows us how God put everything in order to give us life. God was thinking of us before we were made. Do: Help children move back to the group space to learn about Day 4. Make it Digital (10-15 Minutes) What You Need: Computer for Each Child, Wifi, Prezi Website Say: I hope you were listening to the story, because right now, you are going to explain the amazing, spectacular phenomenon that is Day 3 of creation. Do: Help each child get situated and open Prezi on their computers. Say: Prezi is a fun presentation tool. You are going to use it to tell the story of Day 3. Are you ready? (Pause for Response) Do: Allow the children to explore Prezi and create their presentations. (www.prezi.com) Have children show their work and discuss what they made. Say: Day 3 is mostly about plants and God sure made a variety! The world is full of plants and without them we could not survive. What an awesome thing it was for God to make plants knowing we would need them! Do: Help children move back to the group space to learn about Day 4. 1 Upper Elementary – 3 Learning Activities: (Day 3) Invisible Ink Messages (5-10 Minutes) What You Need: Lemons, Bowls, Paper, 100-watt Light in Lamp, Q-Tips or Paintbrushes Say: A piece of fruit is a plant, right? What is the coolest fruit you can imagine and why? (Pause for Response) Well, I happen to think that lemons are pretty cool. Why? Lemons can make invisible ink! Do: Give each child a lemon that has been cut in half and a bowl. Say: Squeeze some lemon juice into your bowl. (Pause) Now take a moment to think about a message you would want to write about the third day of creation. (Pause) After you have determined your message, use a Q-Tip (or paintbrush) to write your message. Don’t tell anyone what you wrote! (Pause) Example: Look here - http://pinterest.com/pin/314266880218116362/ Say: Now that we all have a message, we are going to play a game. You can tell us what you wrote or you can tell us a different message. Then, we will guess if you are telling the truth. After everyone is finished, we will reveal your messages! Do: Play the game. After the messages are dry, hold them up to the light and see what the children really wrote. Say: Your invisible ink messages are excellent. This is just one example of how plants are phenomenal and useful. God made an amazing world full of things we use all the time. Our God is an awesome God! Do: Help children move back to the group space to learn about Day 4. 2
