Course Description
Fundamentals of Art Appreciation is a one-semester course that explores various
aspects of art in an effort to intrigue students’ minds and encourage students to adopt a
fascination for an understanding of fine art. As students begin to examine the elements
and principles of art, they will study important works of art, selected from various types
of media, including painting, sculpture, architecture, and photography. Students will
explore various types of art media and techniques as they investigate the question of
why art is created. This course will provide students with a working knowledge of
concepts and an enriched vocabulary so that they can become more informed
consumers of art.
Course Objectives
When you finish this course, you will be able to:
 Apply the elements and principles of art to actual works of art
 Be familiar with the various types of media used to create art
 Identify reasons for creating art and various subject types
 Critique and evaluate works of art
 Become knowledgeable about careers in art
 Discuss and describe art using an enriched vocabulary of art terms
 Trace the progression of art through history
 Identify different art periods and their historical influences
 Recognize the relationship between art and culture
