DISTRICT BAND AUDITION INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS
DATE:
Saturday, December 13, 2014
Kellam High School (All SENIOR auditions)
2665 West Neck Road
Virginia Beach, VA 23456
1. Students must register at the appropriate registration desk at the appropriate site (school).
Students may only register and audition on the instrument(s) for which they were preregistered. Students must register on the next available line on the registration form (they can
not skip numbers). Registration will be held in the Main Entrance at Kellam High for Senior
District auditions. The waiting area will be in the Commons at Kellam High School. Concessions
will be available for purchase at both sites.
2. Each student will be given an audition number slip at the registration desk. DO NOT LOSE THIS
SLIP. This slip must be given to the guide (student worker) in the audition room in order to
audition. In cases where more than one room is used for a senior district audition, the guide in
the first room will return the slip to the student when that portion of the audition is complete.
The student will then give the slip to the guide in each additional room. Junior district
percussionists will get one audition slip for each instrument they audition on.
3. Students should report to the registration desk at their scheduled registration time.
Registration for each instrument or alphabet section will close 30 minutes after the assigned
reporting time or when the next instrument is scheduled to begin registering--whichever time
is earlier. Students registering late will be disqualified. Students may not register before the
scheduled registration time unless called upon by the Announcer.
4. DO NOT play instruments in the waiting area or in the hallways. You may only play your
instrument in the warm-up room and audition room. Students will be disqualified if they
choose not to follow this rule. Students may also be disqualified for any inappropriate behavior
anywhere in the building or on the grounds of the audition sites. This includes, but is not
limited to, slamming doors, stamping feet, or other displays of temper or frustration!
5. DO NOT TALK DIRECTLY TO THE JUDGES. Only whispered questions to the guide are allowed.
If a guide is not in the room and you have a question, go to one of the workers right outside
your audition room and have them ask the question. Failure to adhere to this rule will result in
disqualification!
6. In the audition room, students will be asked to play various material by the judges. The
metronome tempo will be given by the judges before the student plays. When the metronome
stops, the student should begin to play, maintaining the proper tempo. No tempos will be
given for sight reading. Remember that major scales will be called for by instrument pitch--NOT
CONCERT PITCH. Music stands will be provided in all audition rooms.
7. Because of the large number of students auditioning on some instruments, two (or more)
audition rooms may be required. Two rooms will be used this year in the following SENIOR
auditions: Senior Piccolo, Flute, Bb and Eb Clarinet and Trumpet. These woodwind/brass
players will perform major scales and the prepared piece in the first room, then perform the
chromatic scale and one sight reading piece in the second room. Senior percussion will take
place in four rooms. Senior percussionists refer to audition procedure included in this
document. Junior percussion students auditioning on more than one instrument will audition
in two rooms. STUDENTS MUST AUDITION IN ALL ROOMS.
8. ALL students must provide their own copies of the prepared music! Only the prepared music
may be taken into the audition room. No scale information may be written on the prepared
music.
9. Percussionists must furnish their own snare drums, sticks, and all mallets. The host school will
provide all other percussion equipment needed for the audition. There will be some percussion
equipment available for students to practice on while in the warm up room, but there will not
be enough equipment for everyone in the warm up room to use. You may bring your own
snare drum if you choose, but drums should be mounted and tuned before entering the
audition room. Middle School audition will have a drum in the room for you to use if you
choose to use it.
10. Transportation to and from the audition site is the responsibility of the student. Transportation
problems or leaving music or equipment in cars are not reasons for auditioning at a later time.
Students who have completed their audition and are waiting for rides, must remain in the
waiting area of each school. No students are to be wandering around the halls. Failure to
adhere to this rule will result in disqualification.
11. No unauthorized persons are permitted in the warm-up or judging areas. Parents, friends,
private teachers, etc. must remain in the waiting area while waiting for students.
12. Results will be e-mailed to District 2 Directors. Audition results will not be posted for students
at the audition site.
13. The junior timpani audition will include a long roll worth 10% of the score. Students will strike
the lowest drum and roll piano-forte-piano within a 30 second time period, or until asked to
stop by the judge.
14. There is no way to predict how many of the students who pre-registered will actually show
up to audition. Therefore, there may be a large gap between when you register and when
you are called to the warm-up room. Bring something to read or study in the waiting area
and plan to spend several hours in the audition procedure!
15. Students who are auditioning on baritone/euphonium need to be sure to tell the guide whether
they are reading treble or bass clef and be sure the guide announces the correct clef to the
judge. Students auditioning on contrabass clarinet need to be sure to tell the guide whether
they are playing in Eb or Bb and be sure the guide announces the correct clef to the judge.
16. DO NOT BRING CELL PHONES INTO AUDITION ROOMS. ANY STUDENT THAT DOES SO WILL BE
IMMEDIATELY DISQUALIFIED.
