My Culture of Compassion Culture regards my beliefs, my morals, my way of living, who I am and what I project to others Often influenced by family and friends, my beliefs have been cultivated by the examples of my elders Meaningful relationships, built on trust, care, and love have led me through life Parental guidance, from my own and others’ parents, has taught me the most important lessons As a child and now an adult, I am accustomed to caring relationships and expect them from people Social gatherings of family and friends are times for sharing laughter, meals, and memories Schools have always created a common thread throughout my family, friends, and community Identity is formed by the people I surround myself with and what I choose to pursue Open minded consideration for different groups and cultures has always been my norm Now, as a teacher I work to impart this same attitude of respect in my students Asking myself how I can create an environment that nurtures the same meaningful relationships I had Teaching allows me daily opportunities to develop my beliefs, both professional and personal Exposure to the cultures of my students’ families allows me to learn more about them Learning environments must be made comfortable for each student, regardless of their differences Implementing classroom structures, habits, and language that promote community Vulnerability is shared as students feel comfortable enough to take risks with each other in their learning Independent, respectful thinking is explained and encouraged New relationships of trust and care are formed between students and teachers alike Groups of cultures, traditions, and personalities are joined and celebrated By Hilary Forkner
