Project Title: Snohomish Watershed Open Space Strategy (WOSS)
Purpose of Project:
Snohomish Watershed Open Space Strategy (WOSS) reinforces County sustainability objectives through the development of a
robust, multi-functional system of open spaces and green infrastructure.
Brief description of project goals, strategy, and key activities:
The Central Puget Sound Regional Open Space Strategy (ROSS) is an effort to conserve and enhance open space systems that
contribute to the ecological, economic, social, health, recreational and aesthetic vitality of a region that is home to more than half
of the State’s population. The ROSS seeks to establish regional priorities, physical plans, needed financial mechanisms, and
collaborative governance to advance a comprehensive green infrastructure network for the four-county area. Outcomes will
include an integrated strategy for the overall region, with priority projects and key actions identified for each watershed.
The Snohomish Watershed Open Space Strategy (WOSS) nests within this ambitious Central Puget Sound ROSS, and ultimately
will be integrated with similar strategies for the six other major watersheds in the four-county planning area. Lessons learned in
development of the Snohomish WOSS will subsequently be applied during development of these other watershed scale plans and
strategies. The Snohomish WOSS supports Snohomish County in its effort to implement sustainability plans for a rapidly
urbanizing area just north and east of Seattle. The initiative will foster collaboration among conservation leaders, governmental
agencies at multiple scales, tribal authorities, academic experts, and business representatives to develop an open space strategy to
conserve natural capital and green infrastructure in a large and highly productive watershed while responding to broader
community-wide open space objectives.
