Medium Term Plan
To explore and analyse Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein with the purpose of writing a comparative essay.
For the assessment, AS Level candidates will be required to compare two prose texts from within the chosen theme.
Students will be introduced to, and learn how to, critically analyse:
● Structural devices
● grammatical features
● language and imagery

(6+1 weeks)
Focus on understanding and critical analysis of text with the aim to compare with another selected text with a shared theme.
Students work through the novel chronologically with themes and context introduced and explored throughout the unit. Students will develop a critical understanding of the text, whilst developing their comparative analysis toward the end of the unit.
This STP assumes that students will be studying their comparative text alongside Frankenstein.
This text has not been specified, but suggestions have been made on how tasks could be adapted to compare.

Context – Introduction to the text/author/letters.
‘Ways into the text’
Introducing the author and the context of the novel
Introduction to the gothic genre and romanticism
Insights into central themes of the text
Reading of short texts/extracts to support understanding
Students will read and analyse the text focusing on key extracts that link to the central themes of the novel.
Wider reading and extract teaching to support critical understanding of the novel
Students will write an essay each week with some comparative focus.

Overview of assessment
● Written examination, lasting 1 hour.
● Open book – clean copies of prescribed prose texts to be taken into the examination
● Assessment consists of 40 mark
The assessment consists of 12 questions. Students answer two.
