Secondary Two Parents’ Seminar English Literature Friday 13 July 2012 English Literature • In essence, we believe that English Literature will develop our students to: • Be able to critically and independently read, analyse and appreciate literary texts. • Be able to develop and effectively communicate personal and critical responses. English Literature Aims of the Literature syllabus at Bedok View 1. Discover the joys of reading Literature 2. Appreciate Language 3. Engage personally with the texts 4. Articulate perceptive and analytical thinking 5. Explore how the different genres function 6. Appreciate the importance of contexts Importance of Literature post Secondary • For Junior College • To qualify for the Arts Stream, Literature is considered as one of the Humanities subjects that can be counted. • For Polytechnics: • Courses such as Advertising and Public Relations and Mass – Communication require good grades in language and Humanities subjects. • Literature will therefore be an added advantage. English Literature To take Literature at Sec 3 • 60% pass at Sec 2 level Text: • Paper 1: Prose • “The good earth” by Pearl S Buck • Seen and Unseen Prose and Poetry • Paper 2 : Drama • Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare Focus: • 5 areas of study • Personal response to the following: • Character, plot, theme, setting and style • To provide a critique of unseen prose.
