Hymn 258 Hymn 258 v. 3 JAMES RUSSELL LOWELL Adapted (258) TON-Y-BOTEL WELSH HYMN MELODY Oft to every man and nation Comes the moment to decide, In the strife of Truth with falsehood, For the good or evil side. A great cause, God’s new Messiah, Shows to each the bloom or blight, So can choice be made by all men Twixt the darkness and the light. New occasions teach new duties, Time makes ancient creeds uncouth; They must upward still and onward Who would keep abreast of Truth, And serenely down the future See the thought of men incline To the side of perfect justice And to God’s supreme design. Though the cause of evil prosper, Yet ’tis Truth alone is strong; Though her portion be the scaffold, And upon the throne be wrong, Yet that scaffold sways the future, And behind the dim unknown Standeth God within the shadow Keeping watch above His own. SH 210:25 What is termed matter, being unintelligent, cannot say, “I suffer, I die, I am sick, or I am well.” It is the so27 called mortal mind which voices this and appears to itself to make good its claim. To mortal sense, sin and suffering are real, but immortal 30 sense includes no evil nor pestilence. Because immortal sense has no error of sense, it has no sense of error; therefore it is without a destructive element. 3. SH 96:12-21 1221 This material world is even now becoming the arena for conflicting forces. On one side there will be discord and dismay; on the other side there will be 15 Science and peace. Mortal error will vanish in a moral chemicalization. 4. SH 82:31-2 In a world of sin and sensuality hastening to a greater development of power, it is wise earnestly to 83:1 consider whether it is the human mind or the divine Mind which is influencing one. 5. SH 196:31-2, 5-7 The press unwittingly sends forth many sorrows and diseases among the human family. It does this by giv197:1 ing names to diseases and by printing long descriptions which mirror images of disease distinctly in thought. A minutely described dis6 ease costs many a man his earthly days of comfort. What a price for human knowledge! SH 196:25-30 Many a hopeless case of disease is induced by a single post mortem examination, — not from infection nor from 27 contact with material virus, but from the fear of the disease and from the image brought before the mind; it is a mental state, which is afterwards outlined on the 30 body. 6. SH 228:3-6 3 The transmission of disease or of certain idiosyncrasies of mortal mind would be impossible if this great fact of being were learned, — namely, that nothing 6 inharmonious can enter being, for Life is God. 7. SH 424:28-31 To prevent or to cure scrofula and other so-called hereditary diseases, you must destroy the belief in these ills 30 and the faith in the possibility of their transmission. 8. SH 153:25-8 13654:1 We weep because others weep, we yawn because they yawn, and we have smallpox because others have it; but 27 mortal mind, not matter, contains and carries the infection. When this mental contagion is understood, 30 No fleshly heredity Mind removes scrofula Source of contagion we shall be more careful of our mental conditions, and we shall avoid loquacious tattling about disease, as we would avoid advocating crime. Neither 10/15/2014 10:56 PM Truth is the only antidote to pandemic fears - from Concord 6 of 10 https://www.concordworks.com/concord/print/print.sp sympathy nor society should ever tempt us to cherish error in any form, and certainly we should not be error’s advocate. Disease arises, like other mental conditions, from association. Since it is a law of mortal mind that certain diseases should be regarded as contagious, this law obtains credit through association, — calling up the fear that creates the image of disease and its consequent manifestation in the body. 9. SH 179:21 21 Treatises on anatomy, physiology, and health, sustained by what is termed material law, are the promoters of sickness and disease. It should not 24 be proverbial, that so long as you read medical works you will be sick. SH 180:17 Doctors should not implant disease in the thoughts of 18 their patients, as they so frequently do, by declaring disease to be a fixed fact, even before they go to work to eradicate the disease through the ma21 terial faith which they inspire. Instead of furnishing thought with fear, they should try to correct this turbulent element of mortal mind by the influence of divine Love 24 which casteth out fear. SH 185:32-4 A patient under the influence of mortal mind is healed 186:1 only by removing the influence on him of this mind, by emptying his thought of the false stimulus 3 and reaction of will-power and filling it with the divine energies of Truth. 11. SH 174:30-8 We should understand that the cause of disease obtains in the mortal human mind, and its cure comes from the immortal divine Mind. We should prevent the 175:1 images of disease from taking form in thought, and we should efface the outlines of disease already formulated in 3 the minds of mortals. When there are fewer prescriptions, and less thought is given to sanitary subjects, there will be better 6 constitutions and less disease. SH 378:26-28 God 27 never endowed matter with power to disable Life or to chill harmony with a long and cold night of discord. 13. SH 227:30 30 If God had instituted material laws to govern man, disobedience to which would have made man ill, Jesus would not have disregarded those laws by healing in 228:1 direct opposition to them and in defiance of all material conditions. 14. SH 232:19-22 Jesus never taught that drugs, food, air, and exercise could make a man healthy, or that they could de21 stroy human life; nor did he illustrate these errors by his practice. 15. SH 384:6-12 God never punishes man for doing right, for honest labor, or for deeds of kindness, though they expose him to fatigue, 9 cold, heat, contagion. If man seems to incur the penalty through matter, this is but a belief of mortal mind, not an enactment of wisdom, and man has only to enter his 12 protest against this belief in order to annul it. 10/15/2014 10:56 PM Truth is the only antidote to pandemic fears - from Concord 8 of 10 https://www.concordworks.com/concord/print/print.sp 16. SH 377:26 The cause of all so-called disease is mental, a mortal 27 fear, a mistaken belief or conviction of the necessity and power of ill-health; also a fear that Mind is helpless to 30 378:1 3 6 defend the life of man and incompetent to control it. Without this ignorant human belief, any circumstance is of itself powerless to produce suffering. It is latent belief in disease, as well as the fear of disease, which associates sickness with certain circumstances and causes the two to appear conjoined, even as poetry and music are reproduced in union by human memory. Disease has no intelligence. Unwittingly you sentence yourself to suffer. The understanding of this will enable you to commute this self-sentence, and meet every circumstance with truth. Disease is less than mind, and Mind can control it. 17. SH 536:1-8 In the Apocalypse it is written: “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for 3 the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.” In St. John’s vision, heaven and earth stand for spir6 itual ideas, and the sea, as a symbol of tempest-tossed human concepts advancing and receding, is represented as having passed away. New earth and no more sea 18. SH 150:26 The doctrine that man’s harmony is gov27 erned by physical conditions all his earthly days, and that he is then thrust out of his own body by the operation of matter, — even the doctrine of the superiority of matter 30 over Mind, — is fading out. 19. SH 127:30-2 (to 1st .) 30 Christian Science eschews what is called natural science, in so far as this is built on the false hypotheses that matter is 128:1 its own lawgiver, that law is founded on material conditions, and that these are final and overrule the might of divine Mind. 20. SH 419:18 Think less of material conditions and more of spiritual. 21. SH 125:5-6 Moral conditions will be found always har6 monious and health-giving. 10/15/2014 10:56 PM Truth is the only antidote to pandemic fears - from Concord 9 of 10 https://www.concordworks.com/concord/print/print.sp Hymn #2 v. 2 2.
