The Kernel award was presented to 230 Scouts at a special recognition event held in Hy-Vee Hall at the Iowa Events Center. Each year Mid-Iowa Council, Boy Scouts of America conducts a Popcorn Sales event. The Great Iowa Popcorn Sale has supported Scouting since 1983. It has become a significant part of financially underwriting local Scouting unit activities and council operations. Over 600 volunteers coordinate and participate in the annual popcorn sale. The impact of the popcorn sale reaches far beyond the local unit making it possible to provide Scouting programs through the Council that involve more than 20,000 members in central and southern Iowa. In addition to helping their local Scouting units, the process of selling popcorn helps young people gain skills that develop the positive characteristics of Scouting, such as following through with a commitment, and working towards a team and personal goals, as well as learning how to approach and effectively communicate with people. The 2011 Project Popcorn Sale set a record with sales increasing 9% over last year generating $1,100,000 for local Scouting in central and southern Iowa. The proceeds are divided between the council and the individual units that sell the popcorn. The money is used to send Scouts to summer camps, pay for events like the Pinewood Derby, purchase Scouting equipment, and fund other activities and expenses. Popcorn will continue to be available at Mid-Iowa Council or through local Scouting units through the end of December as long as supplies last.
