Student Board Position Descriptions November, 2010 If you have any questions please feel free to email Alex, Director of Student Life at alex@uschillel.org Student Board Members The goal of the USC Hillel Student Board is to ensure the meaningful Jewish experiences of students engaged throughout the Hillel and broader campus communities. The board is established to ensure that Hillel is a warm, welcoming environment dedicated to providing value, and community to every Jewish student at USC. Student Board Members are asked to work as a team, in partnership with Hillel staff, to achieve the goal of creating a welcoming Jewish community at USC through leadership development, Jewish and Social programming, as well as other opportunities. Members of the board will play integral roles in the development and implementation of Hillel’s overall strategy, student programs, initiatives and campus partnerships. Board members will support the efforts of their fellow students to enhance Jewish life at USC. All Student Board Members (from herein called Members) shall attend weekly (or bi-weekly) meetings set by the Student Board president. Members will regularly support, attend and promote Hillel programs generated by other Board members as well as non-Board student leaders. Members are responsible for engaging students at weekly and monthly programs. Members will encourage and help develop new student leadership. To ensure sufficient communication, collaboration and partnership, each executive committee member (President and VP’s) will meet weekly with the Director of Student life to work on projects, programs, follow-up, issues and concerns and strategize on next steps/directions. General Student Board Members General members are responsible for attending weekly (or biweekly) meetings, contribute to the development of programming and projects with the Student board and serve on 1-2 committees to help implement and facilitate programs. President Overall Responsibilities The President serves as Hillel student representative on the USC Hillel Board of Directors, to the broader alumni community, and to the Jewish and general student bodies at USC. The main goal of the President is to ensure and maintain a proper running student board at USC Hillel. Responsibilities include: Overseeing and working in partnership with the Director of Student Life and all Student Board VP’s Running weekly (or bi-weekly) student board meetings. The President is responsible for working with the Director of Student life to create the meeting agenda Holding weekly meetings with the Director of Student Life/Hillel to set weekly Board meeting agendas, discuss general strategies, and review programmatic initiatives. Ensuring that announcements are made at Shabbat and BBQ’s, either by the President or other student leaders. Work with Vice Presidents to ensure all key committee positions are filled. Making an address at High Holiday services. Acting as a liaison between The Student Board, student organizations and external organizations including, but not limited to USC, the Los Angeles Hillel Council, and The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles. Help coordinate Student Board Retreats. Assist staff in coordinating elections, develop job descriptions, and recruit new students for the incoming student board. Act as the spokesperson for The Student Board when dealing with the media. The President will be the tie breaker in the event of a tie within the Student Board. Vice President of Engagement Overall Responsibilities This officer is responsible for working with the Director of Student Life to develop and implement USC Hillel’s “Relationship-Based Engagement” strategy. Our core approach is that students will identify, establish and maintain relationships with other students, strive to understand student interests and passions, and subsequently connect them to the Jewish life and community at USC. Engagement should include approach to reach nonHillel affiliated students in order to broaden Hillel’s reach into the USC community. Responsibilities include: Appointing Freshfest Chairs and chairs to oversee all post Freshfest Engagement efforts. Working with Staff and Students to identify potential individuals and audiences for engagement Developing and maintaining relationships with Jewish students through coffee dates, and email communication. Working with program chairs to develop and implement engagement strategy for key programs Working with staff and engagement volunteers to monitor engagement progress through tracking mechanism (google doc, REACH program, excel) Attending weekly meeting with the director of Student Life to review strategy Attend weekly or bi-weekly meetings as established by the President/board Being aware of communication with the communication director and other VP’s and maintain communication with staff and President VP of Campus Relations & Partnerships Overall Responsibilities The Vice President of Campus Relations and Partnership is responsible for building relationships with USC campus groups and developing strategies to establish collaborative partnerships. Responsibilities include: Responsible for registering USC Hillel with the Office of Religious Life and the University Student Government as an official campus club Developing a list of campus groups to work with in the coming year Meet the USC campus committee heads/representatives of 10-15 groups, establish rapport. Work with active program committees to develop 2 programs in partnership with a campus group each semester Reach out to campus groups to promote and market other student board and student initiatives coming from Hillel. Responsible for updating and maintaining a “how-to” list on advertising on campus. VP of Programming Overall Responsibilities This officer is responsible for working with chairs of all social and recreational committees to develop and implement programs, on and off campus. Responsibilities include: Working with the student board to recruit a social committee/team to help implement and develop programming Have weekly (or bi-weekly) meetings with their committee with support from the Director of Student Life to develop programs Maintain communication with members and VPs of the Student board Work with Social Chairs to develop post-FreshFest and Welcome week social activities Work with individual students to support, promote, and help with the creation and facilitation of their programs Implement one large (over 40ppl), one medium (15-40 ppl) and one small (5-15) events/program/activity each semester which may include, but are not limited to: VP of Jewish Life Overall Responsibilities The Vice President for Jewish Life at USC Hillel is a fundamental part of Hillel’s senior student leadership, and reports directly to the student President of Hillel. The Vice President for Jewish Life has primary leadership and oversight responsibility for the Jewish Life Committee, which is comprised of the chairs of the various subcommittees of the Jewish Life Committee. The Vice President for External Relations (or her representative), Hillel’s Israel Fellow, and Hillel’s rabbinic staff. With the advice and approval of the Student President, the Vice President for Jewish Life appoints the chairs and co-chairs of the Jewish Life subcommittees and may create new Jewish Life subcommittees. The chairs of the Jewish Life subcommittees may recruit members to their committees, subject to the approval of the Vice President for Jewish Life, but no member of a Jewish Life subcommittee may create their own committees. Responsibilities include: The Vice President for Jewish Life attends biweekly meetings of the Administrative Board, and chairs the Jewish Life Committee, which meets at the discretion of the Vice President for Jewish Life. The Vice President coordinates the committee and supports the committee members in their efforts to plan events and determine Hillel practices. The Vice President for Jewish Life works closely with the other Vice Presidents, and would be well advised to periodically invite the Vice Presidents to attend meetings of the Jewish Life Committee. The Vice President for Jewish Life works particularly closely with the Vice President for External Relations with respect to Jewish organizations on campus. At the present time, the Jewish Life Committee is composed of the following subcommittees: Shabbat, Ritual, Holiday, Jewish Studies, Tzedek, Holocaust, Music, Israel, and Interfaith Programs. Hillel’s rabbinic staff and Israel Fellow also serve on and advise the Committee. The Vice President for Jewish Life works particularly closely with the Rabbinic staff to advance the Jewish Life Committee. Tzedek Chair The Tzedek Chair works directly within the Jewish Life committee to initiate, develop and implement social actions/social justice programs. They will work in partnership with the Director of Jewish Life and the VP of Jewish Life. They will meet with their committee once a week (or bi-weekly) to discuss upcoming issues and programs. They will also, with help from the VP of Campus Relations and Parternships, collaborate with other community service student organizations at USC. Israel Chair This officer will act as the liaison between all the Israel Committees at Hillel and on Campus such as SCSI and Trojans for Israel. The Israel Chair will work directly with the Israel Fellow to initiate Israel Programs throughout the semester. The Israel Chair will have a direct responsibility to work on Israel programming such as: Advocacy work Yom Ha’Atzmaut programming Taglit-Birthright Israel recruitment and registration Faculty-Student bridge building initiatives
