St John’s Primary School in 2015
St John’s School focuses on the achievement of all children. We measure achievement in the same way as schools across Jersey and the U.K.
Pupils’ achievement is measured in two ways: their progress and their attainment. Progress measures how far the child achieves from their
starting point. Attainment measures how high they achieve. For example, a child with a low starting point may make far more progress in their
learning than a child who finishes the year with higher attainment. Together, progress and attainment measures tell us how well children achieve
at school.
The Context of our school.
All pupils, who attend St. John’s School, learn extremely well in the core subjects of English (Reading & Writing) Mathematics and Science.
These are particular strengths of the school.
Initial assessments of children using standardised measures, in both Nursery and Reception, are accurate. They show when children enter the
Foundation Stage (Reception Class), they learn quickly and make good progress. This continues throughout the school. Analysis of Key Stage
1 results over the past three years shows the school has performed consistently higher than the UK national average in English (Reading and
Writing) Mathematics and Science with 93% of pupils attaining National Standard expectations and above in Reading, 94% in Writing and 100%
in Maths
A similar analysis of Key Stage 2 data shows results are consistently higher than the UK expectation and exceed the Jersey National Standards.
Between 2013 - 2015, 96% of Year 6 pupils achieved the National Standard expectations and above at the end of Key Stage 2 with 96% of
pupils attaining National Standard expectations and above in Reading, 96% in writing and 96% in Maths. School predictions based in Reading,
Writing, Maths and Science, using the school’s accurate and robust pupil tracking systems, predicts this trend continuing.
The school keeps detailed records of the progress children make from starting school to finishing school. These show children make good
progress in the Foundation Stage and by the time they leave St John’s School, they have predominately made expected progress, with many
making above average progress. The school supports all pupils and monitors the progress of different groups of pupils. Those who require more
support do very well, as do the most able pupils. The school provides specific help, whether that is one-to-one support, identified small group
support or extension groups in English or Mathematics. As a result, children with Special Educational Needs make good progress, with
attainment averaging slightly higher than that of other sector schools. The progress made by the Year 6 class in July 2015, was exceptional.
This was due to the careful planning of resources and interventions to support pupils’ learning needs. The attendance rate at St John’s School is
97% which is marginally higher than in Jersey as a whole. The schools’ results are checked by external assessors every year.

Pupils are expected to make two levels of progress between the end of Key Stage 1 and the end of Key Stage 2. A high
percentage of pupils in Year 6 made more than expected progress. We do not have Jersey data at this stage; however, we do
know that our pupils made more than expected progress.
